I think there's very few free REX2 downloads. Kalava once had a few but they
seem to be gone.
I can only recommend purchasing ReCycle and do your own loops. With the EXS
(and Logic) supporting REX2 I can guarantee for hours of fun. And hey, while
there's not much free REX loops, there's tons of free "plain" loops waiting
to be recycled.
I don't know about THAT much commercial REX libraries either, but I'm not
sure about that as I prefer to do the recycling job myself.

On the other hand, you could allways try out pHATmatik Pro - but if you
followed the recent thread you may not be after it too much (don't get me
wrong, I still like it).

I second that motion. I use Recycle! exclusively to edit loops. I like the flexibility
of being able to drop out drum parts, and just being able to create new loops from the
original. I recently started using Recycle! to create "Groove Control" type loops, and
then import the files into EXS24, and import the ".mid" file into the sequence, and
control the overall tempo of the loop. I love the software for that one reason if
nothing else, because I can slow the loops down to fit the overall tempo of my songs
without worrying about trying to line up everything.

I heard a lot of good things about Stylus(spectrasonic's software) and hope to make a
purchase, but I don't think I'll ever stop using Recycle! though. The software is a lot
of fun to say the least.

My suggestion to you is to download a demo of the software, and try it out. And for the
price, Recycle! is a great weapon for editing loops, and importing rx2 files.

Hope my little input helps.

50 REX2 files in total and some of them are not bad at all IMO, I just
finished converting them.

Yeah...I'm on a Mac too... Sascha was able to open them but I'm nearly
that he's on a PC. Still...don't know for sure that is the issue.
Isn't a .rex2 file a .rex2 file...and isn't Logic supposed to support
.rex2 files?

They should defenitely work on Macs as well. A while ago some people had
problems with some supportive file missing, but I thought that was stuff
from the past with 5.5.
I don't know what kinda file type you'd need to look for on your Macs, but
the name of the file should be something like "REX Shared Library". The
Propellerheads even had it as an extra download, don't know if it's still
there and if you even need it (as said, Logic should add that file by
itself).

Anyways, whenever I put the REX2 files in my "sampler instruments" folder,
they just show up and convert fine in the EXS.

Sascha

Well...Sascha...if you do that...it works. No wonder you're not having
any trouble. You're not using the help menu....

Heh! ;o))
But actually you're right, I ain't.

Anyways, glad you got it working.

Here's a few tips regarding REX2-to-EXS import:
- Set a global import path in your audio record menu path in case you want
to keep those loops as "generic" ones. That path obviously should be a
subdirectory of your usual EXS sample directory.
- Keep the original REX files somewhere (I wouldn't keep them in the
"sampler instruments" directory after conversion is done). They come in
handy in case you want to preview loops. Which brings up the next point...
- You can preview REX files in song tempo (!). Any audio import menu will
work for that. I'm usually using shift+pencil on an audio track, straight in
the arrange.

And now a superb PC only tip (talking about superior OSs, eh?):
- Open the EXS, have it floating over your arrange.
- Use shift+pencil (or the plain audio import menu, whatever you prefer).
- Scroll to your REX files. Prelisten to them as much as you like. Remember
to keep the EXS visible!
- As soon as you find a suitable loop, load it into the EXS - WITHOUT (!)
closing the audio file "open" dialog (this is the part that won't work on
Macs)!
- Continue surfing loops, you may eventually find a better one. In case that
happens, load the better one into the EXS. Note: It won't be displayed
instantly, but it will be loaded!
- When done, press "Cancel" in the audio file import menu.
=> The last loaded loop will now be displayed in the EXS.

Once you got used to that procedure, surfing, prelistening and loading loops
is incredibly fast. And yes, it's a goddamn shame this ain't working on
Macs!

Some addition: You may need to change this path each time you convert a new
set of loops. In case you are working with REX files in the arrange you may
even need to switch the global option off. I mean, you don't want song
related audiofiles in your EXS sample folder...

Another addition: I meant that you'd load the appropriate loop in the EXS'
pulldown, not from that "open" dialog (which wouldn't work anyways). Of
course it's only making sense to have your REX files and the EXS files
sorted in the same way (identical folder and subfolder structure that is).

Sascha

Yes, thanks. I found a program called "Beat Creator" from Zero-X.
Seem to be a similar program. Funny, both creators Zero-X and
Propellerheads are from Sweden. I´ll check the demo now and
hopefully it will do the job.

Library formats

2003-02-10 by Julie Larson

Hi everyone,
I hope this isn't a major stupid question...but throwing care to the
wind... When buying libraries for the EXS...should you buy in EXS
format...or Giga? Now, before you start throwing tomatoes...I have
some reasoning behind this.

The Giga sample libraries are designed with many more capabilities than
the EXS has at this time...I would suppose that the EXS libraries are
designed to accommodate what the EXS can do now. If and when
advancements occur in the EXS...you could go back and re-convert your
Giga library and theoretically implement more features...but your EXS
library would require programming...am I right here?

...Any thoughts?

thanks,
julie

I would get assurances from the library-maker that the EXS version has
programming expressly designed for the EXS, or that if it wasn't, that the
EXS version was fully checked out to play nearly as well as the Giga (and
if it was designed for Mark I or Mark II). I don't know of any library
offhand that was natively produced on the EXS (but I know the EXS front end
is appealing to some of them, and that some may come out).

What would be cool - if sampling packages had a "Nutrition Facts" type of
"warning" where it would say what the native format was, and what "level"
the conversion formats were at. Such a thing never could be compulsory, but
it could be voluntarily adhered to, if someone issued a standard.

To directly answer your question, I would get the EXS versions, as that
they likely wouldn't exist if they weren't checked out - but then nothing
surprises me these days.

(Just as a side note, what should be happening is that libraries should be
coming out in multi-format designs, rather than paying extra for each
format. Check out Sonic Reality www.sonicreality.com , their new and soon
old libraries are coming out in a multi-format way - get one package (with
2-3 CD's) and you get all the formats.)

There have been several complaints, mine included, over the EXS setups on many
of the Pro-Sample CDs.

I have a few here with some presets that will not play or are noisy, looping
does not work correctly, etc.

Yes, especially now that the libraries require multiple computers to
run! The Freeze command will help, but it's not the end of the issue.
