You're loading them from the wrong place. Instead of the setting menu,
load from the empty black slot at the top in the center of the open
plugin window. Do either a short click or a click hold and a flip menu
will appear showing all of your available instruments.

I'm having the same problem- using the flip menu in the
black area at the top of the control pane, all samples
are grey and unloadable.
Won't see anything on the HD or CD. Is there some kind
of setup step I need to do first to make these samles loadable?
Is there a step by step detail of this anywhere? The manual
says how to do it, but no info on troubleshooting if it doesn't work

Sorry about the typos! Still no luck with loading any samples, I tried useing the
empty black slot and the instruments appear but the samples are still not
available. Maybe there is some setup setting I'm missing? I don't know, thanks
for the help though.

Uhm, let's first get our terminology straight. "Samples" are
individual wave files (e.g. a C3-pp.aif sample from a piano), while
"Instruments" are files that organise a collection of samples into a
EXS-playable setup.
Instruments are loaded from the black 'button' between the Options
and Edit button in the main EXS interface. Samples are loaded in
Zones in the Instrument Editor (which appears after you've clicked
the Edit button).
Now: which one is giving you trouble, the Instruments or the samples?

I think the problem you and dwdavew are having are related to OS X.
Clearly it is necessary for the sampler instruments (and maybe the
samples, but I doubt it) themsleves to reside in specific places
foloowing specific path directories. They are probably not in the
correct location. Being an X virgin, I can't help you at this point.
Perhaps one of the OS X users can identify the proper locations for the
sampler instruments.

All right, got this solved. I had 2 sampler instruments folders, and
now put the right one in the right place.

Now that I can load the instrument, I can't figure out how to play it.
The manual doesn't
go into how to patch it in the environment. I tried several different
ways, but still no go. I have
a relatively simple setup, I can't believe it's that hard to figure
out. I'm using the K2K
as the keyboard controller, nothing coming thru. I'm going thru the
Core Audio at the moment,
until Digi releases core audio support for the 002. I'm listening thru
headphones from the
computer headphone out. I've run the demo song, so I did manage to
patch the k2k to
those tracks and play it out, so I'm not striking out completely here.

You don't patch it wnywhere at all. Just insert an EXS instance in
some Audio Instrument strip in the mixer (which I suppose you've
already figired out), and then assign an Arrange track to this Audio
Instrument strip. *Select* this track, and play your controller.
That's all there is to it (or: should be to it).

That's it. I know it had to be simple, but there's no step by step
details for
anything in this manual. Much thanks.
