Cooling my 2101

Cooling my 2101

2006-09-08 by james roberson

Hi everyone, I am new here and just wanted to tell you guys about my upgrade
to my 94 2101. It has the latest firmware, 20mhz crystal and ppc-210. I
installed a 120mm fan in the lid over the power supply and let me tell you
WOW!! The heatsink is now out of a job. The fan has a dedicated power supply
outside of the 2101. I did this mod because my 2101 would lockup after 30
min or so, when I put my hand on the heatsink OUCH!! blazing hot; now the
heatsink does'nt even get warm. The best part is no more lockups!!
AWESOME!!!

Just a little info for ya,
James

Stay away from the LED fans. They look cool but make noise.

Which fan is quiet? I haven't even recieved the 2101 yet but the one I had before never had a problem with heat.

Keep an eye out on the unit if it runs hot. It's ususally a sign that
one of the voltage regulator IC's in the back are going south.

You shouldn't have to need a fan. We've done a ton of rig installations
where the 2101 is in a tight rack, which are shipped around (tossed
around by roadies) and still function nicely for years despite the
abuse and the limited air flow in the racks. A good rule of thumb is to
keep the poweramps in a separate rack.

I would be surprised because the guy I bought it from was the
original owner and it was kept in a studio rack as backup for
another 2101 so when I got it a few months ago it was like mint!---

RE: [gsp-2101] Re: Cooling my 2101

I had a tech put a new transformer in my 2101 and I can smell the heat
coming out now. A fan might be helpful. I have an identical 2101 for backup
though so I guess thats why I haven't worried about it much.

To be quite honest, you're treating the symptom instead of the
disease. You shouldn't need a fan. I would have replaced the voltage
regulator(s) first. They're very common and easy to find in any
electronics supply store.

Forced-air cooling could potentially lead to increased dust and dirt
gathering in the internal components since air s forcibly sucked in.
The amount of dust does depend on where the unit is installed - and
this does shorten tube life.

What shortens tube life, the air or the dust? My mesa amp has a factory installed fan blowing over 16 tubes. ... From: gsp-2101@yahoogroups.com

Re: [gsp-2101] Re: Cooling my 2101

Dust. It causes uneven heating in the tube plates, especially on
horizontally installed tubes (e.g. Triaxis, MP-1).

The general advice is to clean it out on a regular basis.

Great thread!

I have/had the same problem years ago and since then, I've had a little fan
placed
in my rack blowing on the 2101's rear to "band-aid" this issue. I should
have
looked into the voltage regulators instead I guess!

Can you tell me exactly which components are these voltage regulators?
I'm looking at the unit now and I'm thinking they might be U93,U91 and U92.
They are on the far left corner, clamped down, indirectly attached to the
heat sink. Am I correct?

Thanks
Sean

it will operate. COOLER IS BETTER!! Heat kills electronics. I only
wish I had done this years ago with my first 2101 that overheated and
left this earth. The same thing happened to my ADA MP-2, had it in a
rack with plenty of space and it cooked itself to death like a little
toaster oven. So in short, I will check into the voltage regulators
but I will never take the fan out. Hell my computer has 6 fans and
is'nt the 2101 essentially a computer for guitar?

I don't have my unit opened up right now but according to the schematic
diagram, you're correct. You can get the schematics in the files
section of the other yahoo group called GSP2101.

The Clean Tube setting uses only tube V1. For the DistortedTube and
SaturatedTube settings, the signal goes through both V1 and V2.

Interesting the Artist or L.E. I forget which, came with matched
GT's. Anyway, try the Penta in V1, closest to you when facing the
unit, and the EH in V2.> > Hi everyone, I am new here and just wanted

Tubes

Hi,
My 2101 tubes are going microphonic. It's an artist series with groove tubes. I'd like to replace with the same thing. Does anyone know a good place to source the tubes and any tips for this procedure? Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks,
Mark
