4 cable method

4 cable method

2012-05-23 by Rickenbacker

How do you hook this up too the effects loop and do you have to do something to the 2101 to turn on the effects, i cannot figure it out in the manual..

Re: 4 cable method

Send out to the efx, return into from the efx and within the program...see page 89 of the manual, they use the example of a head with effects, but it is the same principle:

"Now we are actually feeding the two pre-amps the same guitar signal. Most Amp heads have an FX loop, so lets put this to work for us. Use an instrument cable to connect the Amp head's FX loop out to the Left (mono) FX Loop return of the 2101. Take another cable and connect the
2101's Left Output (mono) to the Amp head's FX loop return"

That's the "hardware" part of it. There's also options within each program, here's from page 7 of the manual - scroll through your program for the FX Loop and you'll see:

Bypass : The FX Loop Returns are off, and completely ignored.
Summed : The FX Loop Returns are summed together with the original signal using a 50:50 ratio.
No Sum :If plugs are connected to the FX Loop Return jack(s), they are the primary signal source. If there is no signal present at these jacks, you don't hear anything from the GSP-2101 Artist.

I don't have the unit in front of me, or I would have shared from that, but I do have access to the manual right now.

Hope that helps!

Page 88, the last sentence: "if your Amp head doesn’t have a second input, a -Y- cable will work just as well".

the picture confuses me, because , there is an input on the amp for the guitar, but the input beside it should be an output, because it has a wire going too the front of the 2101 input... does that make sense...

OK i tried again and failed..I am trying it through a fender deville..Its has a effects loop and also 2 inputs on the top..
all i got was a big hum, so i switched the cables and then got a very low signal through the amp, nothing i did with the 2101 changed the volume or effect, so it wasnt working as soon as i unplugged one of the cables at the amp, it got very loud , like normal..I thought i turned on the effects loop in the GSP.. When you select summed, it should be on, i would think, and if you want too save it you click store...

I'll take a shot at it.... The following will bypass the 2101's pre-amp and analog section and will lower the noise floor. Just the digital effects will be available.

1. Guitar <----> Amp instrument input
2. Amp loop send jack <----> 2101 Left Mono Efx Return
3. 2101 Left Mono Out (Not the Efx send) <----> Amp loop return jack
4. Enter the program and select No Sum on the FX loop page
5. Turn off the noise gate
6. Set the mix in the 2101 to 100% wet

Re: [gsp-2101] Re: 4 cable method

2012-05-24 by PinkFlydxx@AOL.com

It is correct that this configuration will completely take out the 2101's
analog section (i.e. compression, distortion, etc), but will allow you to
use all the digital effects that are available on the post 2010 FX Return
input side.

This set up allows you to use the amplifier's pre-amp (and any that you
have coming in between the guitar and the amp) in combination with the 2101's
digital effects.

However, I would not technically refer to this set up as a "4 cable
method", but it is an option. I have found that I personally like some of the
2101's pre-amp effects and prefer to use the typical 4 cable method, even
though I think that I lose some of my amp's pre-amp capabilities in doing so.
I have overcome even this issue (somewhat) by bypassing those 2101 pre-amp
effects in a given patch in order to try to allow the amp's pre-amp to be
more dominant. It works ok, but still not 100% satisfactory.

I tried the Owner's Manual technique of splitting the signal from the
guitar, and using the 2101's Bypass/Summed/NoSum to determine which pre-amp I
was going to use. While it looked like a great idea in theory, the ability
to control the unity gains and/or the seemingly countless volume and wet/dry
adjustments became too daunting of a task for a weekend warrior type
player such as me. However, if set up properly, it would give you the maximum
amount of control over your amp and 2101's preamp capabilities.

Best of luck.

PS: What I would really like to find is an easy means to allow me to turn
on and off certain effects within a given patch by using the Controller
One. I know this is available, but damn, the programming effort seem complex
and still may not result in the overall result that I am seeking. It
would be nice to turn on and off the distortions and/or delays on different
patches - and to have maybe a volume control on the whammy pedal. I don't
mind having only 5 patches per bank if that's what it takes with the on/off's
on the upper five (i.e. if you remember the old GSP21 Pro's then you know
what I am talking about), but I do not want to spend hours to set up a
single program to allow this.

Anyone got any tips or tricks on doing this? Thanks to all.

I've done it but it's been a while. Take a look here or search the board. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gsp-users/message/8210
