received bad data in system dump

received bad data in system dump

2003-08-29 by rene1711

I got a gsp 2101 LE three weeks ago - and i am a new member in this
group.

I am happy with the sound and possibilities of this device and
worked a lot to create new sounds. I decided to save the work and
bought a midi connection cable to my pc, got several sysex dump
programs to manage the task.

Here is my problem:

I was successful in transfering the system dump to the pc. The size
of the file matched exactly the size indicated on the display on the
gsp 2101. I compared the file structure with an hex-editor to sysex-
files loaded from the net - and it seems ok!

I can not reload the system dump back to the gsp - after transfering
the data, the gsp comes up with the message 'received bad data in
system dump - resetting...'. And it really resets the system!

Could that be a timing problem? I use an 2GHz PC with Windows XP and
an ordinary sound card with joystick adapter.

Any help would be appreciated.

Rainer

What programs are you using? I have used cakewalk with no problems at
all, but then I used a P200.

I'm new to this Sysex stuff, too. How do you use Cakewalk to perform the
back-ups? Explain it step-by-step 'cuz I ain't got a clue.

Thanks,

RE: [gsp-2101] received bad data in system dump

2003-09-01 by MM

Been a while since I've done it but go to the view menu

View>sysx

Then click the 'receive bank' button (look like an arrow pointing
downward in cakewalk 9)

A dialog pops up - select 'you start dump on instrument'

Cakewalk waits...

Go to the 2101 and start the dump...don't even ask me on that...probably
in the midi button menu somewhere, or the utility....

Restoring to the 2101 is basically a reversal of the process.

Sorry I couldn't be more detailed, maybe someone else can help out

Also I believe backups can only be restored to the same 2101 software
version they came from ...

Re: received bad data in system dump

2003-09-01 by rene1711

I am using Sysex Solution V2.1 but tried also the dump program of
Martin Ecker. The effect is always the same (as described).

Yesterday I found out, that it is possible to transfer a single
patch, but not the entire gsp memory dump. So my guess is, that the
operating system does not handle buffer overflows via midi interface.

Any ideas to solve this problem?

Rainer

Re: [gsp-2101] Re: received bad data in system dump

2003-09-02 by marko.menart@yahoo.com

I had the same problem, when I was using Martin Ecker's "Patch Dumper" under WindowsXP (under Windows 98 everything was OK).

I solved problem by changing the software:

To send MIDI bulk I started using "Dumpster" by David Churcher.
Cool thing about this program is that it automaticly stores an algorytm with a patch, which Martin's program doesn't (at least to my knowledge).
Before I had some problems when dealing with user algorhytms. When dumping a patch, which uses user algorhytm to GSP I had to send algorhytm separately. Everything was fine until someday I send a wrong algorhytm to the GSP. The machine locked and I had to remove the batery and whatnot to finaly awake my beloved 2101. Than I found Dumpster and life was (is) fine again.
This program dumps patch to the GSP 2101 on exactly the same place from which was recieved. (if it was dumped from No. 52, it will be sent to the program No. 52). So to reserve a patch 100 for those patches is a good idea.
I use this program only to recieve patches from GSP 2101 to a computer. To send patches to GSP 2101, I'm still using Maritn Ecker's "Patch Dumper".

This is solution No.1, No. 2 would be using Windows 98 again... So you decide...

You can find "Dumpster" on Dieter W\ufffdchter's site.

Re: [gsp-2101] Re: received bad data in system dump

2003-09-02 by Graham Pearson

Hi Rainer:

A couple of years ago, I tried writing a Windows-based program that retrieved system dumps from the GSP 2101. I noticed that most PC's had trouble retrieving error-free dumps - some of the data was often corrupted during the transmission.

To avoid these data transmission errors, I kept repeating the system dump procedure until I got two dumps that were identical.

My suggestion for using any software is that you repeat the system dump procedure and compare the resulting files:

1. Their size should correspond with the number of bytes indicated by the GSP 2101 during the dump.
2. The contents of the files must be identical.

You can use the Windows WinDiff command to compare file contents. If you don't have WinDiff.exe on your machine, let me know and I'll send you a copy.
