I don't have any Hammerfall card, but have you checked the "Audio Sync Mode"
for the AW8 in the synchronisation dialog?
Should be on " Digital S/P DIF" AFAIK.
And hm, maybe I'm telling the obvious again, are you sure there's some
proper information coming out of the Hammerfall's S/PDIF out?
Apart from that, on some systems it doesn't even seem to be necessary to
digitally sync certain cards with the AW8 (well, of course you shouldn't
route phase critical stereo tracks on different card's outs). A friend of
mine does that with a MOTU2408 and an AW8 without any problems. Apparently
this even works with longer audiofiles, maybe it's because the AW8 does that
MTC to samplerate correction thing.
Note: This friend of mine is like a timing master, he would certainly flip
out if the tracks would drift out from each other.
