A word to the wise regarding debating the election - lets drop it - this
can go on and on and it won't solve anything. The damage has been done. A
lot of the 'anti American' rhetoric on this list comes from Bush's
handling of the world in his first few months. We're actually the
Europeans are pretty forgiving now that we need their support. If you're
happy with him then good for you. I'm embarassed to have him as our
leader. In fact, a pundit on CNN yesterday, in speaking of Tony Blair,
said "Don't we wish Tony Blair were the President of the United States."

Of course we could (and should) say the same about debating the actions
taken against Afghanistan -it's done and this debate will be endless.

But I will just say I do have a problem when people try to paint
black-and-white that it was a clear-cut election and implies that whichever
person occupies the White House now is illegitimate (I say whichever because
I have no doubt at all that if Gore won he would be treated to the same
objections).

Interestingly, side note, I was in Europe when Bush visited there several
months ago and it was interesting to hear the news coverage. It was
respectful and divided as to how he did. It seems he scored some points in
the UK and overall my perception (2 very qualifying words there of course)
was that the trip went better overall in Europe's perception than it was
portrayed in America though of course there were bumps and there were also
many Europeans very negative about the trip.

I hope I don't get flamed for saying this, but there's a fair few people in
the United Kingdom who are of the opinion that you would all greatly regret
such a thing!!!

Well since you can't resist, what about the black Florida voters who were
prevented from voting? What about the irregularities with the military
ballots - allowing them without postmarks - but only in Republican
counties. Ultimately it came down to the vote of one man - Justice
Clarence Thomas - formerly most famous for his comments about Long Dong
Silver and "Is that a pubic hair on your coke can?". Thats the guy who
cast the deciding vote.

And regarding Bush - the Arabs hate us/him because he has invited Sharon
to the whitehouse twice but never invites Arafat at all - quite
differently than Clinton who seemed to like Arafat. The Euro's on the
other hand, hate us because he/we wouldn't sign the kyoto agreement.
Mexicans hate us because we won't let all of their citizens who have
snuck in become instant citizens (again as we already did in the 1980's).
The Greeks hate us because we bombed Yugoslavia. Japanese hate us because
we bombed them. The French hate us because we saved thier country from
the 3rd Reich. Russians and Chinese always hate us. The south Koreans
hate us because we only sacrificed 30,000 of our men to make sure they
weren't pushed into the sea, and were not willing to cause WWIII with
China and Russia. All of Latin AMerica hates us because we buy their
drugs. I think there is a small island in the pacific where they don't
hate us - yet.

Well, I'm not sure of the relevance of what you wrote to what I wrote. I
stated that it isn't black-and-white as to who won and that if Gore were
president now there'd be the same reaction against him and how he won. You
pointed out irregularities which are part of the whole debate.
