Agreed

On the plus side.....

By going to a University with a jazz program I was able to play with
guest artists as diverse as Don Ellis, Ron Carter, Bob Mintzer, Tommy Newsome,
Carla Bley & Steve Swallow,....etc. Spent a week hanging with Joe Pass and
at another time, spent a week with Bill Evans. I consider this experience
invaluable in gaining perspective of what performing at a high level is all
about. This was a music school in the southwest U.S. that only has a
"moderate" Jazz program, their main focus is education.

Yes, much of the atmosphere was academia at it's worst, however, the
experience gained there (especially for an inexperienced 18yr old) was
worth it.

Just to add to the ongoing conversation and the comment of it being a
factory, some of my fellow classmates include Paula Cole, BT, and Able
Laboriel Jr. Not exactly cookie cutter musicians. They may not have been
known then, but they were just as talented as they are known to be now. I
don't know anything about the whole poser issue or what that means. I think
some people need to be spoon fed and others know how to find what and who
they need to grow (not referring to anyone in particular, just
generalization). I think you were like me and managed to go out and find
the good cats.

one man's cookie cutter is another man's holy grail.
