Hi All
Using IAP command I have just ported an S-record download utility to
the (LPC2106).
When the first byte to be programmed is received, a 512 byte RAM
buffer is mapped to the sector and 512 block of FLASH which it is
destined for. The present FLASH contents are copied to the block.
The code to be programmed is then collected in this 512 byte RAM
buffer until a byte for an address outside of the buffer range is
received. This causes the 512 RAM block to be copied to the
destination FLASH block (512 byte block in the destination sector)
and a new RAM block is prepared.
[Generally the S-Rec contains addresses starting from the lowest
address to the highest address without too much skipping about and
so this tends to be efficient.]
After writing the code and debugging it I tried a download of a
large S-Rec file of about 120k (from sector 0 to 14) and sent it at
19'200b/s (LPC2106 PCLK running at 28MHz). All seemed to work well.
The code is operating from RAM at the moment, since I am working
with a JTAG debugger, and so there are no problems with serial
interrupts during the download.
Later the download code will be in sector 0 of the FLASH and so it
will probably be necessary to disable interrupts during IAP commands
(at least this is the simplest solution). What I am wondering though
is how long the IAP routines actually take to execute and so what
will be the limiting download speed that is possible without loosing
serial characters?
In other words - how long does it take to execute the IAP command to
copy 512 bytes [smallest block possible] of RAM to FLASH? Does this
increase as the FLASH ages?
Is it advisable to operate the interrupts from RAM space during the
download or is this complicating the matter for a simple download?
regards
Mark Butcher

We are having problem with the Part ID
on the LPC2292 and the LPC2294.
Both chips are returning the value
0x301FF13 (50462483)
which is the value for the LPC2194.
We are using the Philips Flash Utility to
get the Chip ID.
What's going on?
Thanks

Where did this come from? The latest flash utility on the Philips

Apps can confirm this is safe to install and use??

The links to the Flash Utility on that page do not work.

Hi shedon,
Just a note. If you want USB 2.0 for the ARM7 systems with only a
few external components, we use a Silicon Labs. CP2102 chip. You just need
the USB connector, 4.7uF/5V Tantalum and a 0.1uF cap. This is a USB 2.0 to
serial bridge that can run to baud rates of 460.8K baud.

Hi Leon,
Excuse, simply I searched for schematics with LPC2292, and have not
found them here, a folder lpc22XX was empty, and when I have found
circuits have decided to place them in it to a folder that for other
them did not search, I did not know that here it is impossible to
place.

You could put a link to the schematics in the Links area. That way there is
no problem with copyright. Or, you could ask Olimex for permission to make
their files available.

Charles,
These appear to be USB 2.0 full speed (12 Mbps) devices, not high speed (480
Mbps) devices, correct? If so then they don't differ much from other USB
interface chips such as those from ftdi, except possibly lower component
counts.

I'm pretty sure you won't find any high speed USB chips with an
integrated physical interface (PHY). I seem to recall that the high
speed interface requires something fundamentally different in the chip
design that would require additional mask layers, so it makes the chip
less cost effective. Is you need high speed, you can count on using a
separate PHY chip for now.
I just did a search and found a number of articles about IP vendors
adding USB PHY cores to their product line. So it may not be too much
longer before we see interface chips for high speed with the
integrated PHY.
2005-01-08 by Curt Powell
Rick,
You are probably correct. I was simply pointing out that, while meeting the
USB 2.0 spec, the chips do not support high-speed transfers (to a lot of
people USB 2.0 and high-speed are synonymous when in fact high-speed
transfers are simply an option under 2.0).
FWIW, we tried interfacing a Cypress EZ-USB SX2 chip to a '2106. The GPIO
on the '2106 simply was not fast enough to keep up with the configuration
timing requirements of the SX2 so we abandoned the attempt. Fortunately,
for our purposes, full-speed (12Mbps) is fast enough and there are lots of
options in that arena.

Hi,
Does anyone have some example code for gcc for a nested timer
interrupt ? I have googled a bit, and have found some discussion
regarding the switching of modes from interrupt mode to system mode
before re-enabling interrupts.

Before you go too far make sure you've read the timer race conditions errata.

I am using the LPC2292, and there is no mention in the LPC2292 errata
regarding timer problems.
http://www.semiconductors.philips.com/acrobat/erratasheets/2292.pdf
Can you maybe point me to the specific errata sheet that describes this ?
The idea is to set up a periodic interrupt of x milli-seconds. After the interrupt
has been acknowledged, interrupts are enabled again. If an overrun occurs, the
interrupt routine will be interrupted, and I can then detect this and take appropriate
action as neccesary.

Take a look for Timer_issue.pdf in the files section (I'd post a link but
that seems problematic). I think this has not made the actual errata
sheets yet and AFAIK has not been addressed in any of the new devices yet
(that was certainly the case when I asked about the 213x).

You expect the timer interrupt to take multiple milliseconds? That's a
pretty busy interrupt routine. I'll take some measurements of the SPI
interrupt I'm working on if you'd like a time comparison.
Hmm, I did some performance measurements on a polled timer for the
lpc-newlib
support.
http://www.aeolusdevelopment.com/AppNotes/LPC210X/an-timerperformance.pdf
microsecond resolution, 12 microsecond minimum time, keeps track of time as
long as it's polled at least once every few minutes. The 12 microsecond
time is the overhead required to deal with various overflow, underflow and
scalings so it's doing a fair amount of work. I wouldn't expect even a
fairly busy timer routine to take the two orders of magnitude longer that
would be required to overflow a multi-millisecond timer.

Yes, my main application actually runs in the timer interrupt.
Typically I use a periodic interrupt rate of 2ms. My high priority code
then executes every 2ms. This code must not take more than about 1ms
on average, and NEVER the full 2ms. After the "fast" code executes, I re-enable
interrupts, check a "slow-code" flag, and if not set, set the flag and start executing
the slow code. This code can then be interrupted by the 2ms interrupt, so that
the fast code always executes. When the interrupt returns, the "slow-code" continuse
to execute. The slow code can take up multiple 2ms cycles as needed. When the
slow code returns, it disables interrupts and returns back to the "main" code, which
in my case is just used for background debugging and Built-in-test code.

As can hopefully be seen from my explanation above, I do not use
the timer interrupt to time thing per-se. I use it to implement a simple
shedular where I can garauntee that portions of my code WILL execute
every 2ms. I can then add debugging stuff, and user interfacing etc.
in the background without affecting my main application timing.
This approach has worked remarkably well on every CPU I have used except
the 8051.

OK, I understand now. I would have done it as a single fast timer
interrupt portion and put both the slow portion and the background portion
in a state machine in non-interrupt mode.
A thought occurs to me inspired by the thread on SWI and VICSoftInt. You
could (depending on what other interrupts you may be using) restructure
this in a cleaner way.
- Move the timer interrupt to the FIQ
- Put the slow portion in a standard interrupt vector controlled
by the VIC (ie standard IRQ)
- Leave the background task as is
- Now when the FIQ fires it will preempt any IRQ (if running).
* in the FIQ perform the high priority task as before and
then use VICSoftInt to trigger the IRQ based interrupt if the flag is set
appropriately.
- In the IRQ perform the low priority task with flag setting
around it.
If you don't care about an immediate re-trigger of the low priority task
you could eliminate the flag communication between the two interrupts. If
you do care a little attention would need to be paid to the potential for
race conditions. I did something similar to this on an ST10 when I needed
to change the priority of an interrupt (to allow it to be interrupted) on
the fly.
I think that would work. It's been a while since I read up on VICSoftInt
so it's a bit of a throw-away suggestion.

Look at TIMER.1 errata for the LPC2114

I ASSUME the LPC2292 has the same problem.

I had thought about using a FAQ + IRQ. This should work fine for two levels.
The problem is that as soon as one needs more than 2 levels, one will have to
use nested IRQs or FIQs. I have found this sort of multi-level interrupt structure the
easiest to implement on Motorola processors. They seem to put a lot of effort into their
IRQ architecture. And so far the only app note I have found on nested interrupts on the
ARM, is for the Freescale ARM series of MCUs. Unfortunately so far I have been
unable to find the code that goes with the app-note. I have found some documentation
about this from ARM, but it is for use with their compiler which currently provides much
better interrupt support in C than gcc.

Hi to all,
I'm new in ARM7 world, and now I'd like to buy jtag compatible interface
for debugging/programming issues. I saw that Amontec offers interesting
tool: "Cameleon" that can work as Macraigor's Raven, but i need opinion
from experienced users of ARM7 processors. Also I'm considering UJTAG
from Keil? Please help me to make right choice, or maybe you can propose
to me other JTAG. I want to use it with gnu tools, or IDE's that support
GNU compilers/tools like Keil.
Best regards,

My JTAG design in the Files area works fine as a Wiggler-alike, and will run
faster than the real thing. I've got an Amontec Chameleon and that also
works OK for me, emulating a Raven. I've only used them with the LPC2106.
FWIW, The Chameleon also worked OK as a Xilinx Parallel Cable III when I
tried it with a Xilinx CPLD.

If the Wiggler is fast enough for you and you don't need to use other
devices like FPGAs, there isn't much point in changing.

You do need to link pins 8 and 15 at the DB-25 connector, for it to work
with the current MacRaigor software. I don't think that Olimex have got
round to modifying it yet.
It's fine with the Rowley tools, of course.

As long as you use an older version of the macraigor tools (see my site
below) you don't need the hardware mod:

A while ago a virtual com port driver was uploaded. I have been
wondering about this: is it possible to create a virtual com port
driver on USB MCU that does not require any driver installation
on windows? I would like the virtual com port to behave like mass
storage and keyboard/mouse devices, when they are plugged in they
are immediately available. Why do these work without host drivers
while all virtual com ports I see require special drivers?
Thanks,
Doug

Yes. USB CDC 1.1 ACM Serial Emulation.
I implemented this as one of my design requirements is to support Win32, Mac
OS X, and Linux. USB CDC ACM will work without a "driver" for all three.
Plugging into a Win32 machine requires a .inf file, no driver, Apple does
not, it simply works. On Windows the driver will maintain the same port
assignment when moving between USB ports. The Mac OS X is the most
conforming to the actual spec. I posted the CDC implementation requirements
on the Apple USB list. I will be testing on Linux sometime this week.
All of the examples I've found of USB CDC ACM on the internet are
non-conformant with the spec, and will not work directly on the Mac, and
possibly Linux.
