Re: [oberheim] trying to diagnose generall weakness of my matrix 12

I don't own a matrix 12.

If you have an audio interface with a software mixer check that it's set up properly.
You need to 'Normalise' those waveforms and get them up to @0dB so they can be heard.

Although it's quiet it sounds OK to me. The Juno series had a 'Bass Boost' built into their circuitry I believe, so they are naturally bass heavy because of this.

Does the matrix 12 have CEM3372 filter chips? My Akai AX-80 has CEM3372's. They are not very bass heavy individually, but sound OK with all voices playing. I don't think the CEM3372 is particularly well know for bass. These 3372 chips usually get configured to enable high pass filtering. I don't know if the Matrix 12 has HPF, but HPF circuits can knock a little bass off sometimes, but like I said, I don't think the CEM3372 is a bass maker. They sound great to my ears.

A little EQ would give more bass, and thats may be what your hearing on youtube etc. The videos I just checked out quickly sound CEM3372-ish to me and so does you audio example (apart form volume of course) I don't think there's any major problems. If you have high pass filtering, have a play around and listen to how it knocks the bass of the bottom.

Martin

Perhaps turning the volume up helps?
:P
I could barely even see the waveforms in Audacity
at normal zoom level.
Is your mixer/soundcard healthy?
Those waveforms look terrible, both the Juno and
the Matrix ones.
Like synced or something...
Turn the volume up and try bypassing any mixers if
there was any.
This recording just seemed strange.

Peter

You can still get some big lows though using the triangle waveform and a bit of resonance like you said. Most of the sound is in those CEM chips and each Oberheim I've heard sounds unique. I have four Matrix-1000s and each one is a little bit different, but they sound amazing all together.

that when I adjust the VCF resonance, there is a HUGE difference between
62, and 63.. in fact resonance=63 is the only time the synth grows a
pair... 0-62 is wimpy, 63 is burly.
