Returning and a Softsynth Question

Returning and a Softsynth Question

2014-11-04 by Nicole Massey

Hello list members,
After a break to deal with other things I'm back on the mailing list here. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a good softsynth, preferably either freeware or very inexpensive, that will read Matrix6/6r/1000 sounds and play them back with a decent level of fidelity. My studio is currently in mothballs until I can get a space constructed for it, and so I'm using a lot of softsynths to do things until it's up and running again. I miss my Matrix 6r and 1000 sounds, so I'm wondering if there's any recourse out there.
I'm also wondering how Gibson has been treating the Oberheim brand or if they still own it. Since they are trying to buy Cakewalk (or may have already closed the deal, I don't keep up with such things very often) I think it'd tell a lot about how they're going to handle another high tech company that doesn't focus on guitars and amplifiers.
Thanks for any guidance and info y'all can provide.

Hi !
I maybe could help regarding the first part of Your mail.
An inexpensive way to manage Your Oberheim sounds on Pc could be done using a Soundfont sample manager synth. Can't remember now wich is the best, but i've read somewhere there are some freeware Vsts, too! Give a look on KVR site, or Google around for a free Sounfont synth. Some people sell online Sounfont packs for almost any synth, but You could build Your ones with sounds You like the best using programs like Samplerobot, if my memory doesn't fail. Using Soundfonts packs, or Wav or so many other ones, is the most comfortable way to have Your synths in a Pc, but..... How beautiful is putting my hands on the real thing !! :-) .
Hope other users could help more with more details about Your questions.
Cheers,
Francesco.

I use the BassMIDI soundfont player, which provides a lot of control options and can do some very useful things. But I'm not looking forward to having to sample every sound from both a Matrix 6r and a Matrix 1000, 1100 patches, across at least 61 keys to get several huge sound banks that would require a lot of memory in a machine to load the sounds, so though that has some possible value it's not optimum. I'll do that if I have to, but I'd rather not.
Any free VST or, preferably, stand alone player would be great. (I'll have to use a VST interface like VST Host for my current setup, as QWS, my current sequencer, doesn't have VST support)

Re: [oberheim] Returning and a Softsynth Question

2014-11-05 by Jon Carroll

to make a sample set, you don't sample every key. Especially for synth
sounds, thats a bit excesive.

On the other hand, something like Extreme Sample Converter goes a long way
toward automating the task.

I use the BassMIDI soundfont player, which provides a lot of control options

Any free VST or, preferably, stand alone player would be great. (I'll have

RE: [oberheim] Returning and a Softsynth Question

2014-11-05 by Nicole Massey

Well, it depends on just how the envelopes are set. If you're doing things with specific envelope setting for when the filter triggers in and other modulators than you need more samples. Yes, many synth sounds from the subtractive period have steady state waveforms, and if you can just set your envelope in the final product like an SFZ definition file then that works well. But if you've got more complex envelope things going on then you've got to use a lot more multisamples to make it sound right. So yeah, you probably won't need 67,100 samples to get it right, especially since there is some duplication in the Matrix 1000 sound set, but it's still a lot of work, not including digging things out of my trailer to pull two units out of a 48 space gear rack.
The big concern is my Matrix6r sounds, as that's a specific map I built using Obiex and Sequencer Plus Gold back in the day to fit the needs of my studio setup, and I have those patches saved on this computer, so if I could find a good stand-alone softsynth that will accept the patch data from OBiex or something similar that'd be best.
And I've had accessibility problems with Extreme Sample Converter, so I can't get it to do much.

RE: [oberheim] Returning and a Softsynth Question

2014-11-10 by F.Manduca

Thanks for sharing the new of this Soundfont software You are using!! Yes, it's so annoying to sample everithing step by step. Maybe, some gentle soul made some free sample packs, and on the other side, if they are not free, maybe they have a reasonable price..... A free M1000 vst, would be so exciting anyway, but so far, we have as a freeware OP-X FREE, a very basic version of the OP-X, Oberheim Ob-X virtual counterpart. Not the same thing, but.... But... Am I wrong, or there is already out there a commercial Matrix 1000 softsynth version? Or is it only an editor? Just for curiosity....
Cheers,
Francesco.

I use the BassMIDI soundfont player, which provides

But I'm not looking forward to having to sample every
 sound from both a Matrix 6r and a Matrix 1000, 1100 patches,
across at least 61 keys to get several huge sound banks
that would require a lot of memory in a machine to load the
sounds, so though that has some possible value it's not
optimum. I'll do that if I have to, but I'd rather
 not.

Any free VST or, preferably, stand alone player would be
great. (I'll have to use a VST interface like VST Host
for my current setup, as QWS, my current sequencer,
 doesn't have VST support)

to make a sample set, you don't sample every
 key. Especially for synth

 sounds, thats a bit excesive.

On the other hand, something like Extreme Sample Converter
 goes a long way

 toward automating the task.

RE: [oberheim] Returning and a Softsynth Question

2014-11-10 by Nicole Massey

I'm trying to find key sounds from my Matrix 6r that I use a lot -- Dreamer, Totohorn, Jocko, and a few others like the great sweep bass sound from the instrument. Even a non-free 6r/M1000 softsynth that could read my patch maps would be worth it if it uses standard controls to do things. (I'm blind, so these stupid bitmapped interfaces do me no good)

RE: [oberheim] Returning and a Softsynth Question

2014-11-10 by F.Manduca

Dear Nicole,
uh-oh, now I understand how hard it is for You... And You have a very unusual interesting setup, too. I will dig about it, one of these days. So, we need a true expert here, not a lame user like me. Come on guys, do Your best !!

I'm trying to find key sounds from my Matrix 6r
that I use a lot -- Dreamer, Totohorn, Jocko, and a few
others like the great sweep bass sound from the instrument.
Even a non-free 6r/M1000 softsynth that could read my patch
maps would be worth it if it uses standard controls to do
things. (I'm blind, so these stupid bitmapped interfaces
 do me no good)
