That is a variable inductor, listed on the schematic as variable
between 3 uH and 7 uH. It is not a transformer, even though it
may look like an IF transformer.

Are you sure the old one is bad?

A quick search on the web makes me think you will have trouble
finding an exact replacement. Inductors add in series, so if you can find
a slightly smaller one, then you could add a fixed inductor to it to
get the value that you need. You need to be able to hit a specific oscillator
frequency by adjusting the tuning slug, as described in the service
manual.

Probably the easiest would be to get one off of a junk M6 or M6R board.

Re: [oberheim] matrix 6 L3 IF coil transformer replacement???

2016-01-30 by Bob Grieb

I found many inductors for sale that are adjustable.
The problem is that most of them have a pretty small adjustment
range, like 5% or 10%. If the M6 ones can really be adjusted from
3 to 7uH, of course that's a much larger range.

The ones on ebay you linked to are two types. One is nominally 5 uH,
the other is 10 uH. The adjustment range is not stated in the ad. But
it might be something like 10%, in which case you won't be able to cover
the whole range.

The exact inductance you need to calibrate the oscillator depends on
the values of the other components in the circuit. That's why they
provided the adjustment.

How do you know that the old part is bad? If the ferrite core is
broken, it may be easier to simply replace that part than to find a
new inductor. Since the inductor is just wire, it's not something that
would normally fail, in my experience.

Also, Syntaur recently bought a bunch of Oberheim parts. Maybe
they have some of those inductors?

  Bob
