Matrix 1000

Matrix 1000

2007-04-17 by rob_kari

Hi

I've just purchased a Matrix 1000 and thought I'd join the list as I
have a couple of questions.

Firstly, I've noticed that the power supply makes a lot of noise. I
wondered whether this was common with the matrix 1000 and, if so,
whether anybody knows where I could get a (quieter) replacement part?

Secondly, I opened up the unit (to investigate the noisy psu) and
found that the main board has been modified slightly. Basically the
chip next to the timers, which I believe handles midi communication
(according to the information on this page:
http://wolzow.mindworks.ee/analog/m1k.htm), has a wire soldered
between one of its legs and the legs of another chip next to it.
Doesn't seem to affect the unit in any way but I was curious as to
why it's there. Anyone have any ideas?

Regards,

Rob

It is "well-known" that some of the black models are noisy. The white
model is newer and has been reported to be quieter. Which do you own?

In fact, I have a white version, which in my opinion is a little
noisier than my other similar, but quiet white version. I think it is
best to keep the volume at least quite near to maximum level and then
adjust a suitable level on the mixer.

You could try a hum eliminator. It might work. See:

Cheers,
Tiitu.

I own two black models. The differences between them are striking. One, the noisier, has a more resonant filter! The quiet one is quiet, but lacks vim.

I have one white and two black ones. None of them hum (referring to the noise that PSU transformers sometimes make). I cannot detect any noticeable

Hi Tiitu

Mine's the black model. There is some hum on the
audio output but the noise I was referring to is
the actual power supply, which seems to 'vibrate'
quite loudly - much more than my other gear
anyway.

I've got the unit going into an effects processor
before it gets to the desk so the hum on the
output hasn't been a problem as I've got it gated
out but I'll look into your suggestions regarding
that, thanks.

Rob, if I were you, I'd let the power supply replaced or buy an other
M1000 - if the noise is really disturbing. An other possibility would
be to use a filter to cut the noise out, if possible.

Good luck!

Or we could say:

"Hi! Nice to see another Matrix enthusiast. Check out the files section here and you'll find lots of info, including updated operating system files, ROM images, docs and lots of patches, too. Enjoy."

Matrix 1000

Greetings!

I think one of the voice chips in my M1000 is done.
So, I have been looking for places for replacement.
Someone, please tell me you know of a great place to purchase some replacements chips from.

Help.

Thanks.

Ben

This guy in Sweden used to be a great source.

(Don't let it irritate you that he sells the chips as Cheetah MS6 replacements, the Cheetah was more or less a Matrix-1000 ripoff, and the chips are the same.

Hint: before ordering, rotate the chips to find out whether it's really the CEM3396 that's faulty. Activate Voice Display Mode (Ext. Func. 7, Number 1) to find out which one is the culprit.

The power supply noise is caused by the mains voltage transformer, it's a known problem.
How to fix it is well documented on another forum, basically replacement with a more modern switch-mode power supply.

On my M1000, I never noticed the problems as I got mine with a European power cord & I was using it for years with no safety earth. It was racked with other gear which did have earth leads. I never noticed the hum, but used to wonder why the front panel often seemed to vibrate. Seems its the transformer cores vibrating as they are not secured with enough varnish.

Does not seem to cause audio problems.

Regarding the MIDI chip modifications, without a picture of your board it's hard to tell, but there were many official factory modifications
carried out (called ECO's I believe) to correct hardware problems and deficiencies.

One such mod was made to pin 24 of the ACIA chip (MIDI chip) which tied it to the output of another chip so that the pin 24
state could be read by the firmware during calibration routines. Early boards did not have this, so maybe the mod was done by someone
who wanted to used newer firmware. I believe that version 1.11 & newer won't work unless this is done.
