Prophet 2000 MIDI - AAAahhhhhahahahh! Help me set this up correctly

Prophet 2000 MIDI - AAAahhhhhahahahh! Help me set this up correctly

2003-08-25 by toorglick

Call me a dolt, but I can't make sense of the MIDI implementation on
this thing. My main interest is to set up my Prophet to respond a
certain MIDI channel. I don't want splits, I don't need it to send
anything, I just want it to respond to the sequencer and I want the
equivalent to LOCAL set to "on" however that can be done.

I have the manual, I have read it, but since I've slowly been getting
myself into the Prophet my head is not into the manual yet, if that
makes any sense (in complex devices I find that unless the manual is
exceptional, I need to read the manual and then start playing with
the device before the manual begins to make sense, and then
everything usually falls into place quickly and clearly).

Thanks.

channel.>>

mode 3A, they call it in the book, though it's the most widely used midi mode
now. then select the channel. in mode 3B, the machine can be bi-timbral and
you need to press "execute" to see the other channel setting. be aware, though,
that the dynamic allocation should be on and a mono connection made to the
machine for anything like "normal" behaviour in 3A; if it's off, or if you use
left + right outputs, you'll either only be 4-voice polyphonic or have the
sounds bouncing around the stereo image.

Thanks. I could swear I set it to mode 3A but it wasn't working
properly. Oddly, too, although I had the switch in back set to THRU,
it was still sending note and controller messages to the next synth
down the line. I guess I'll have to play with it more, but the more
I work with my P2K the more I suspect it has an issue related to the
Op ROM.

or it could be "digital" trouble of the other kind. I will stand corrected,
if I'm wrong, and I haven't used my p2k in a while, but- I think you have to
explicitly save any changes you make to a preset before selecting another, or
everything (including the midi mode) reverts. could you be doing something like
that maybe?

it may seem counterintuitive to have this setting non-global like this, but
these things were made when midi was young, and they thought you might use the
thing in mode 3A some of the time and 3B some of the time, bi-timbral. I used
to do this a lot, and have the 3A patch using a stack and dynamic allocation
the fatten it up.

the switch on the back is weak hardware- I bridged mine with soldered wires
to make it permanently through. but on the subject of it's midi output, the
apreggiator is great fun with an analogue synth on the end of it.

duncan.

After some fiddling last night I got everything to work the way I
wanted to. I didn't have to save the preset after making the change,
but I did have to make sure I put it back into preset mode after
making the changes. Also, yes, you are absolutely correct about
the "thru" switch: I had to toggle it back and forth a couple of
times for it to finally let a signal flow though it. It's probably
shorted so one of these days I'll replace it with a more robust one.

Thanks for your help!
