Problem with built in sounds

Problem with built in sounds

2009-04-25 by tim_wisecup

hi everyone! I just joined this group as I just won a prophet 2000 on ebay. The built in preset sounds don't all work though. I think 4 of them work. These were just basic waveforms stored on the internal rom, right? So, I don't know anything about the internal stuff in there, but could the ROM be damaged or gone bad in some way that only some of the waveforms are lost but others are ok?

I've looked through the back history in here and a couple other people had this issue but never mentioned if they resolved it or anything. Anyone know how this could be fixed or what might cause it?

I've tested the 8 voices and they all work fine.

how? can you drive the machine yet? if you can, then you will be able to establish whether the rom waveforms are loading into ram correctly by using the voice-edit mode to audition each sound location in turn.

the simplest way to do this is select preset one, then (with the execute button unlit) select sound location 1 (top left of the matrix, & use the parameter knob/buttons to select "1"), & press "execute" so that a dot appears in the display. you will then be able to play sound 1 over it's entire range, without any keyboard mapping applied. repeat this for each sound, but bear in mind that the balance control & voice allocation setup may have an effect on what you hear.

I should say it's very unlikely that the waveforms would be damaged without there being other o/s problems, but you never know...

fwiw, in my 2002, all 16 locations have something in them, & they are all the same size (16).

duncan.

ok, i haven't read the entire manual yet, but i have came to a section telling that the presets should work right off. that's when i jumped and tried them, and not having them all work made me think something was bad. i guess i figured that the presets themselves couldn't be overwritten and were stored on the rom permanently along with the waveforms themselves.

so, i have done as you suggested and the sounds worked! but, i only have 1-8 working, not 1-16 as you say you have. maybe a difference in the models? i confess i do need to read the rest of the manual, but i have actually looked for this info and didn't find much about it.

at any rate, thanks for your help.

ok, so if sounds 9-16 aren't working on mine but do produce sounds on yours, could it be that the waveforms are stored on seperate roms or something and one of them is bad and thats why half of the sounds are missing?

I also tried to figure out how to make the built in presets work. On my p2k I can hear 12 presets. Some of them are layered sounds, some have kbd split in two sounds and some presets numbers contain the same sound.

When I tried what you describe hear (to press the Execute in "sound number" mode so that a dot appears), there´s no sound in the upper third of the keyboard. Without the dot there´s sound on the entire keyboard. How do I get it to work?

I´m shure that I´m going to like this cryptics the day I understand them :D

henrik read the manual for gods sake man!!!
these are things you'll need to know if you want to be successfull at your p2000.
its just not a game of spin the dial and make a sound ...
you must actually know what your doing with the key assign ,keysplit, user map .
to make full use of this thing takes some amount of time ...
and don't rely on what other people tell you either !!! they could be wrong or don't kow , thats why i say read the manual......but then we wouldn't hear from you would we?
execute sucks , i do not use theis feature. it has couple different uses
do not use a disk to boot .
ok be kind
charles

hey charles, we all agree....Read the manual....it is your friend!!

i also found the Prophet Users Manual Summary in the files section very handy

seems to me that new people seem to encounter the 'panning' sound output issue, and also how to play the internal sounds

maybe it would be an idea to add a section to the Prophet Users Manual Summary for these two points.

just my two cents
