My mother has a Wurlitzer electronic organ (circa 1970) whoose keys are making an extra squeaking or rubbing noise when they are pressed and I am wondering what sort of maintenance the organ might require to correct this. I hear the squeaking/rubbing when listening to her play while I am in the same room and find it most annoying when I make audio recordings as my microphones are picking this up as extra noise. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

It's probably the return spring on the back of the key. It may need just a touch of lubrication or reseating in the back of the key. These are individual keys. If it's the keys that come in octave strips, then that's another problem. Have never hear of those keys squeaking though. Do you know the model number of the organ. There might be some kind of rubber key guide underneath the keys to dampen the movement of the keys up and down and right to left. I had a similar thing happen on an odyssey I own. The model number is #4500. What kind of lubricant should she use? So, do the keys just snap off, somewhat like those on a computer keyboard or how should we access the springs? Thanks. You have to remove the top and possibly the back of the organ then remove one screw on each side of the stop tab rail and it will pivot up. On each key is a retaining clip. Carefully pinch the pins together slightly and pull up on the pin to remove it. Slide the spring off and put a small dab of a white lubricant in the groove on the back of the key, replace the spring and the retainer lock. This lock is also how you set the key pressure for each key. Pushing down farther increases the key pressure and moving it higher on the pin decreases the pressure. Check the key for proper pressure by checking the adjacent keys using only minimal pressure. If you needed to remove the key completely, you have to remove the spacer at the back of the key and the key then lifts out. Hope this helps. Keith Niver Master Certified Wurlitzer Tech
