Prophet 5 LED flicker

Prophet 5 LED flicker

2006-03-13 by easterleggs

the short of it: a SC Prophet 5 3.3 with MIDI with LED's/front panel
display that flickers intermittently (especially after receiving MIDI
info for a while). the visual flicker correlates with an audio
"flicker" (imagine rapid, digital-sounding oscillations modulating the
VCA). anybody had this problem before? is my car about to overheat?
generally it lasts through some preset changes, power off/back on,
different outlets...then finally decides to shape up. I'd sure like
to meet some empathizers. thanks-st nich

Hi Nich

Without knowing the unit but knowing electronics and audio in particular
your problem sounds like a poorly regulated power supply. You would need a
schematic of the equipment and a voltmeter or scope to track the power
supply from the mains plug onwards.

I need info on a roland GR-1 ac adaptor

2006-03-13 by grw20022

anyone know if I would have any trouble using any other type of ac adaptor other then a roland ACi-120C input 120v 60hz 17w output DC9V/1000 mA class 2 transformer...does it have to be a class 2 transformer for the GR-1 to work..I did not do that yet, if anyone also has one for sale e-mail me back..Gerry

RE: [vintagesynthrepair] I need info on a roland GR-1 ac adaptor

2006-03-14 by Brian Davies

Class 2 only means that there is no earth connection from the power socket
to the equipment. My experience says use any ac adaptor that gives the same
output or better mA, for example provided the output is 9V DC you could
safely use a 2A unit or even higher, what it mustn't be is lower in mA.

Note that an adaptor may not say specifically that it is class 2 but if it
has two concentric squares, i.e. one square inside another, it is class 2
this symbol designates it so.

By the way, most Roland wall warts I have encountered have higher
voltage than stated on the unit. For instance, a 9v wall wart would
output more like 13 or 14 volts, even under moderate load.

[vintagesynthrepair] Yamaha TX 816 makes loud high pitch sound

2006-03-16 by Brinkmann Music

Assuming the TX816 is "vintage." Anyway, 30 minutes after powerup, the unit itself (not thru audio outs) lets out a loud sustained steady high pitched tone- killer on the ears. It is impossible to isolate exactly where in the unit the sound originates, but it is coming from the physical unit itself. ; Powered unit down, waited about 10 minutes and on powerup, all O.K. ; Then about 60 minutes later, same thing. Next day, been on for 4.5 hours so far- all O.K.
Never got any error codes, internal bats are all good. The power supply was just replaced on unit.
Anyone have any ideas on possible cause/remedy? Or is this a freak incident? Anything else peculiar to these units to watch for?
My only guess is it had just come in from the cold and a long UPS transit prior to powerup. Maybe needs to acclimate?
TIA!

Re: [vintagesynthrepair] Yamaha TX 816 makes loud high pitch sound

2006-03-17 by grantbt@jps.net

With a problem like that you might have to use a can of cool
spray and/or a heat gun to try and isolate the component that
is temperature sensitive.
Also, as I had mentioned to someone else, try a hard reset
on the unit too.
