I think the problem is happening because the Merge Midi In to Out is not set properly. What happens is the MIDI coming from the sequencer or XL-7 gets caught

Also, make sure you are using a TS (2 conductor) plug in the output of the XX-7 it does not have balanced outs and the UA-25 (if you are using that one) does.
