Composer Rom Volumes

2004-05-04 by xkrider1

Hello. Got a Composer Rom from EMU recently and it seems that the
actual Volume levels for different Presets are radically different -
some seem appropriately "loud" while others seem barely audible when
trying to play/record them into a pattern. Is this the way the ROM is
supposed to work? I have tried reseating the ROM. (Sorry, I really
don't know much about ROMs and sampling.) Also, is there a list
anywhere with all the actual sounds and their locations? I'm having
some problems navigating this ROM (Protean Drum is the only other one
I have), not that I'm doing very well with many of the other
features, either, but I'd appreciate some help with this particular
problem, if possible. (Then we move on to the strange flicker in the
display and the shifting pattern presets, but enough for now.)
Thanks, Ken

You're ROM didn't come with a Preset Listing? Odd, maybe contact Emu
directly, they should be able to send you one. As for the volume levels,
that's hard to say as I don't own the composer ROM to check myself. Make
sure you're hitting the pads with the same velocity when comparing is all
I can suggest at this point. If it's still a problem, go into Preset Edit
and change the AmpVol setting and save them as your own custom User
presets.

Display flicker? Are you using OS2.0?

or just download the Proteus 2000 manual from E-mu - Composer ROM presets list in the appendix.

The Composer Rom showed up in a static bag with install instructions
for the 2000; the person at EMU had said it wouldn't be in a "fancy
package", which must have included the preset list. I followed
Bruddah's suggestion of downloading the 2000 manual, and so I've got
the list now. Thanks. Somewhere along that line I got a better
understanding of navigating the Presets/ROMs. More Thanks!!!

Display flicker: I've got version 2.0 (px-7). What this is doing
is "redrawing", if that's the right term, the screen two or three
times rapidly when I press the Stop button. I've had the px-7 for a
few months now and it didn't do this when I first got it. What is
really odd is that it does it on the first Factory Pattern, "Rock
This" but not on the second, "Falling Leaves". Some patterns seem to
do this and others don't. I thought it might be the button,(although
I'm not sure why some screens do this and others don't) and hosed it
out with compressed air, anyway, and also reseated both ROMs, but no
fixola. It doesn't seem to effect anything now, but I was wondering
if this was the beginning of a serious problem.

Also, The Composer ROM doesn't have a USER Bank; I thought that each
ROM had its own USER bank ... and the Composer Preset list refers to
it(?). It isn't showing up on the screen.

Last, somehow the Protean Drums USER Bank O, Preset OOO has become
a Bass Preset rather than the "True Kit" that it is supposed to be.
(I suspect my own bungling here, but no clue.) How do you change
this back to the original preset?

actually, in the Proteus 2000, the first five Composer ROM banks (there are
seven (!!!) if i recall correctly) are duplicted in the User banks. the User
banks (4 of them) are in the machine itself, the presets are on the ROMs.
so, if you have a PX-7, you have up to 4 x (4 to 7) ROM banks + 4 User
banks.

the benefit of this, in my mind, is that none of the presets are sacrificed
to user patches, which is nice.

copy the ROM preset Bank 0 Preset 000 to the User location.

i kinda contradict myself here. there are four user banks in all P2K engine
synths. not five.

Hey Bruddah, Thanks for the response to my questions. I was beginning
to realize that something named Read Only Memory probably didn't have
anything editable on it! (Here at the institute they tell me if I
take my medication on time, I shouldn't have these lapses too
often!!) Certainly do appreciate the help that you, rEalm, aaron and
others are to those of us who are wandering in Nebulous Land; it gets
pretty murky out here at times. Ken

[Also got some information on the screen "flicker", so maybe that
probs cleared up too!]

I think they all do this, and it has to do with the complexity of the
pattern you're on is my guess. When you hit stop twice, you're basically
"reloading" the current pattern, which can be a lot of data. On my
contest track from two years ago (which was very complex), I would
actually see the word "Stop" flicker too. As long as the sound is
consistant, it shouldn't matter if the display does this.
