what's your budget? this will determine your choices. there's good stuff to be had, new or used, at any budget level these days. let us know how much $$ you've got to burn, and i can make some recommendations. a word of advice, my very humble opinion: don't count on new gear to make your recordings sound better. if you've good cool songs to begin with, if you have a clean signal path through your gear, if you've got your dithering & other digital issues sorted out, and finally if you learn to use whatever gear you have to its maximum potential, then your recordings will improve. : ) my brother has a mantra that he says before he goes snowboarding, but i think it applies to music as well: i've got the skills i've got the gear the skills make me good the gear is my path --- In xl7@yahoogroups.com, "flaviotronic" <cracktastick@a...> wrote:

What is your budget? Friends don't let friends use Behringers, unless they can't afford
anything else :) Mackie is a good deal for the money, perhaps the best under a grand...
Cheap compressor that kicks butt on anything less than $2,000, the RNC by FMR Audio. $200
for a stereo compressor that contains a triple compressor in it that is very nice for sending a
final mix through.

I don't agree. It's nothing to do with gear - it's all to do with how you use it. Stu

And don't kid yourself that pro gear will guarrantee pro results either. I have heard some very professional stuff that was done on a home pc with an AWE64 soundcard. I can't stand Peter Gabriel's music either - it may sound good, but that doesn't make it any good. I think I'll pass on the offer. -s2

>And don't kid yourself that pro gear will guarrantee pro >results either. And don't kid yourself that pro gear will >guarrantee pro results either. Word. A friend of mine has released several tracks worldwide and has been featured on Kiss 100, a Balance compilation, a Meat Katie album, and soon a Renaissance album, or perhaps already. He works in his bedroom on Logic 5.5 with a small pair of nearfields. I think the only synth he uses is a Yamaha Motif, other than that everything he does is sample based. His music sounds extremely professional and I'm a huge fan. It's ALL in working with what you have. I recorded a band last month in a million dollar studio and it came out sounding like piss. The Neve console couldn't breath life into this bands music. Neither could nice Manley Eq's or PulTEchs, or UA's, or LA2A's, none of that crap. Sure, it sounded improved with the gear, but you could achieve comparable results from cheap ass software emulators. Now more than ever it's possible to produce pro level music at home on a desktop PC or Mac!!!! You don't need a million dollar studio to get your ideas out. With that attitude anyone without money may as well give up now. Compressors: ART makes a stereo Tube comp. pretty cheap. The Waves RCL is phenominal. If you have to do your own mastering Izotope Ozone is killer. Dbx 160A = great comp. If you got 500 bucks you should consider the Universal Audio suite, comes with an emulator for lots of classic eq's and comps, limiters and such. I personally use a Timeworks comprssor that came with Sonar, along with the Waves stuff and Izotope. UA will be my next move. then probly the DBX. oh boy. i didn't really mean to start a "pro gear" vs. "chump gear" debate.= oh well. bottom line - if you've got the skills, you've got the skills. re-rea= d my brother's snowboarding mantra and ponder its wisdom. but back to thread: with a budget of a few hundred bucks for each piece, th= e only compressor to look at is the RNC, as someone wrote. no question, hands= down, absolutely. go to The Sound Room or Mercenary Audio, both online, and you'll find it. plus, it's so cheap that you'll have more $$ for your m= ixer! as for the mixer, try looking for a used Allen and Heath board. they're rea= lly excellent - a serious step up from our German friends at Behringer and our= Seattle buddies at Mackie. A & H gear has that special Brit mojo - you'll b= e a rockstar, gauranteed. my 2ยข. rock on --- In xl7@yahoogroups.com, Wesley D <Serfiss@y...> wrote: > >And don't kid yourself that pro gear will guarrantee pro >results either= .And don't kid yourself that pro gear will >guarrantee pro results either. > > Word. Right on time :) I used to mix on an Mackie CR1604, but since the mixer quit its job, I use my pc, and now I am considering a new mixer. I have three options: 1. 24 i/o soundcard(s) with controller 2. digital mixer with 20-24 channels 3. analog mixer with 24 channels.... and about $1000 to spend. any thoughts are welcome, I guess I'll stick with option three.... -- best regards, roel ----- Original Message -----

If you want an analog mixer and liked the sound of your Mackie, I would get a SoundCraft mixer. > Right on time :) > I used to mix on an Mackie CR1604, but since the mixer quit its job, I use

I'm using a Tascam DM-24 with the new firewire option. that is a little expensive costing me close to 2 grand. Another alternative is the behringer ddx3216 which can be found on eBay for around $900. Also look at the new Yamaha and Tascam firewire control surface mixers --- In xl7@yahoogroups.com, "djnorythm" <enter_the_netman@h...> wrote:

Make an offer for my Yamaha 01V!

M@,
If you give me $200 I'll take the Yamaha 01V. Any less and it wouldn't be worth it.
Tongue firmly planted in cheek...
