OT Laptop or Shuttle PC

OT Laptop or Shuttle PC

2004-11-21 by Turby

We discused around this threat once, but i still like to recollect
some opinions about it...

I was about to buy a 19inch rack and an LCD screen, in the first
place because of money, but i talked to a very friend of mine... he
advised about the risk of Hard disc damages because of the vibrations
and [sorry dont know the english word] the wetness of the air in
crowded clubs and outdoor. He said a Laptop may be more resistant to
that kind of condicions. Anyhow lots of people work with shuttle case
PCs and i wonder if they use a special kind of harddisk?

Further i checked out some Notebooks. Seems like most of the
manufacturers use shared VideoRAM lately and rEalm advised that they
aint got at all for audio proposals. Lets say that the Notebook have
512 MB of RAM, if i dedicate 16 RAM to the VideoCard, is there still
danger of Dropouts or whats the problem with shared RAM? I didnt want
to replace my desktop PC, i like to use it for DJ proposals and some
out of studio recordings.

Hi

Hard disks have their inner mechanisms hermetically sealed from moisture, however, the circuit board on the outside of a drive is exposed. Hard drives also have mechanisms that pull the heads away from the data portion of the platter after power is removed so shock during unpowered moves presents little risk to data.

Notebooks use exactly the same type of mechanisms and seals but are slightly less prone to damage because the mechanisms are of lower mass.

In both case mounted and notebook systems, the main circuitry (motherboard, RAM, etc) is exposed to the atmosphere and therefore can be affected by high humidity. All such electronics are rated for about 90 -95% RH (relative humidity) non-condensing (meaning the warm humid air does not meet a cooler surface causing moisture condensation). Unless you buy a specialized sealed system.

There are many rack mount cases (industrial types) available that support regular PC motherboards and offer some rubberized mounting of the hard drives to reduce some shock. However, since drives are mechanical devices, they have a higher failure rate than the circuits that run them and for such critical applications as regular performance, I would set up a second drive in the system that is a mirror of the first so that a quick recovery can be made if the first drive were to fail.

You really should try and find a laptop without shared memory first of
all. Most laptops will not let you specify how much memory to allocate to
the video card, and it's not a question of the amount of RAM you have
anyway. The problem, is that it chokes the CPU buss, so you can have a
ton of avaiable memory and still have performance issues if you're using a
laptop with shared graphics memory. Not all laptops have this, typically
only the cheaper ones.

If you want a computer to use at DJ gigs, I highly recommend a laptop for
space saving reasons if nothing else. I've yet to be in a DJ booth that
would actually have enough room for a rack mount PC and LCD screen. Where
as a laptop you can place right on top of a standard turntable if need be
(this is what I do BTW).

Bob,

you said youd use a second Harddisc as a shadow of the first one, how youd
do that, copy all its content and set the HDsks to Cable Select?

I use Windows 2000 as an operating system for my music PCs. It has giving me little to no troubles with music related software and drivers. The instructions for creating a mirror drive in Windows 2000 is located here:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=302969

Other MS operating systems can also be mirrored with hardware and/or software products. Here is a link with some discussions on RAIDS, mirrors and XP:

What MS OS do you intend on using on this PC ?

The RAID/mirror drive (2nd drive) would include everything on the primary 1st drive including the OS. This would allow you to boot from it if the 1st drive failed.

For Windows XP, if you don't have a motherboard yet for this system, you could get a board with built-in RAID capability. Or you can use a file synchronization software such as:

http://www.drive-backup.com/ or

http://www.tgrmn.com/index.htm?camp=goog_mir

any drive can be a RAID drive. it is just the way the filesystem is
placed on the disk. i believe that you can only have raid drives in
xp pro so make sure you have pro before buying any more drives.
another solution someone else mentioned was a motherboard with raid
onboard. these are a little bit more difficult to set up, but would
not require xp pro.

Nope. No good. (I think you were joking?)

Motherboard too bottom line, probaby shares regular RAM with display RAM,
not ruggedized enough for frequent travel unless you put it in a case with
foam (even with the handle). This is a home PC with a handle.

Actually I am not joking and looking to get feedback on MBs etc-

on the other hand - it is all a joke and we are better to understand
it that way. Computers should be the cheapest option available - and
thought of as disposable, because they are - and in no time we will
need yet another.

for ex - if I could make this work:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1076885&Tab=2&NoMapp=0

I would do it!

Here is a quiet and sturdy road option:

RE: [xl7] Re: OT Laptop or Shuttle PC

2004-11-24 by tttsystems@earthlink.net

Are you going to use this PC for sample playback, digital recording or
softsynths (high processing/drive loads) ? Or just as a midi controller or
midi librarian ? That would help in deciding. It sometimes only takes a
small incremental amount of money to get a much better PC.....

Actually I am not joking and looking to get feedback on MBs etc- <BR>
<BR>
on the other hand - it is all a joke and we are better to understand<BR>
it that way. Computers should be the cheapest option available - and<BR>
thought of as disposable, because they are - and in no time we will<BR>
need yet another.<BR>

for ex - if I could make this work:<BR>

I would do it!<BR>

Here is a quiet and sturdy road option:<BR>

Actually for Emulator X w/1820M + LIVE and maybe Cubase

I have a great 1.6 ghz Athlon PC (my first PC) built to top spec now
w/great power supply, cabling, etc but it is loud, the case is huge,
the ASUS mobo will accept max 1.8 ghz processor....seems more cost
worthy to repurpose it than tear it apart and install new mobo and
processor, and now I wonder why I paid $1200 for it - the parts will
far outlast it's usefulness - thus I am thinking cheap cheap prebuilt
for the next PC - if it falls apart by 1-2 years from now...it matters
not.

I stumbled across this site - tips for music pc:

Phil Rees lists video memory as being the least important
consideration for a music PC

Well, I guess I would ask why you think you need a new MB and processor? I
only use a 1.8gHz CPu in my studio, and have rarely (if ever) felt I
needed more power. That should be more than enough to run what you want,
I know cause I do it all the time. ;) You can get a new case (Enlight
makes some very quiet cases/power supplies) and quieter fans
(www.quietpc.com) for less than $150 easy.

Personally, I'm not even thinking of redoing my PC until we start seeing
more 64 bit processors and MB's at a decent price, as well as PCI-X
included on the MB.

Just my $.02 though.

Thought Raid is Serial ATA....Sorry

Meanwhile instaling XP you get asked
Do you want to install a 3rd Party or Raid driver?

Guess that what it is about...
So, how to set up a mirrored system, step by step?

any drive can be a RAID drive. it is just the way the filesystem is
placed on the disk. i believe that you can only have raid drives in
xp pro so make sure you have pro before buying any more drives.
another solution someone else mentioned was a motherboard with raid
onboard. these are a little bit more difficult to set up, but would
not require xp pro.

or

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=39968&item=5142172841&rd=1

or any other.....this will let you set up a RAID/mirror drive in any OS.

I think I am going to get one to play with myself......
