MIDI Program Change Message

MIDI Program Change Message

2004-12-20 by Fab Claxton

Hey gang,

I want to hook up the XL-7 to my Boss SP-505 (sampler). I want the XL-7's
sequencer to control the pads (samples) on the SP-505. For instance, when a
note is programmed into a pattern on track #1 of the XL-7, I want it to trigger
pad #1 on the SP-505. According to the 505's manual, I need to send a "MIDI
Program Change Message" from the XL-7 to the 505. I need to use PC #17
and upwards to access the card (user) banks in the 505. How do I send these
messages from the XL-7? I found in the manual how to receive Program
Change Messages in the XL-7, but not how to send them.

Also, I don't want the patterns on the SP-505 to start playing - I just want to
trigger the pads themselves. Right now, all I can do is start the patterns of the
SP-505 using the XL-7. In order to trigger pad #1 on the 505, would I have to
program a certain note into the sequencer of the XL-7 (ie: C#2)?

Thank you very much to anyone who's able to help,
Fab

The sequencer has several menus that affect these. I am not in the
same location as my gear, so this is from memory.

(1) To send a patch change command via one of the E-Mu's midi port,
the track destination must be ext [external].

(2) To add a patch change command to a track, use the sequencer's
event editor [prog].

I am not familiar with the SP-505, but I assume in order to prevent
its patterns from playing, you have to make sure the e-mu's midi
transport commands (eg, start) don't reach the SP-505. My instints
tell me you probably need to this on the SP-505 side.

Hope this helps.

Or use the XL-7's MIDI Menu command to disable "Transmit MIDI Clock". Just
another option if the SP-505 doesn't have the option to ignore external
start/stop commands.

Not having worked with my gear for a few months, I neglected to
mention this option. --Steve
