midi loopback test failed

midi loopback test failed

in the diagnostic menu (entered by holding the arrow cursors
down ...) i do a complete test - and it says midi loopback test
failed - why ? has anyone had this problem ?

It says "MIDI loopback test failed" because you weren't looping back
MIDI. Hook a MIDI cable from in to out. =)

You have to conect the A midi out to the midi in. This creates a loop
that the software can test for operation of the midi ports ;o)
Be carefull with this, only do it in the diagnostic mode.
Ive heard horror stories with the command station when this has been
done by mistake!

just to be sure 100% - did you mean a cable only directly from midi
out A and into midi IN ? because it is connected to the sound card
via midi and everything has always worked - i was just curious
because i didn't know what that meant - THANKS for the answer btw ...

Yes. When you hook the MIDI OUT of the XL to it's own MIDI IN, a loop is
created. In normal use, if MIDI Thru mode (where stuff that comes in to the
MIDI IN port gets sent back out through the OUT port) is on, the MIDI
information keeps getting duplicated until it just wigs everything out. This
is not a good thing.

The loopback test in diagnostics is used to test the MIDI ports
functionality. A MIDI loop should be avoided at all times. I believe someone
recently (malik?) had a loopback issue that futzed his patterns.
