Pattern Channel Assign

Pattern Channel Assign

2013-12-14 by Scott E. Whitehead

This has come up recently in the effect send conversation but there's still
a question about saving alternate track MIDI outputs.

Say you have a piece of outboard gear with four MIDI voices like a Virus
Snow TI. And you want to send note data to voice one from Command Station
tracks 1-4, voice two with 5-8, etc. This gives you four different (or
stacked) parts for the same instrument all in one pattern. In the pattern,
you can set the channel assignment to MIDI A, channel 1, 2, 3, 4
respectively. Here you also set the destination to external. Then you can
use this pattern as the starting point for new tracks. So far so good.
Test, save, reboot, aaaaaaand your settings are gone. Someone on the list
proposed saving MIDI note data here, which I tried but works erratically.
Last time I did it, one of four saved, and of course, the note plays. I
also played around with saving CC data instead of notes but that didn't work
at all.

Is anyone else trying to do this, have you had any success or do you keep it
set to the default and deal with it as an opportunity for creative problem
solving?

I've done the factory reset with no change in behavior other than having to
redo my master program knob preferences.

Thanks,
Scott

If I understand correctly, you are talking about saving a pattern with "empty" tracks designated to send midi data to external gear. If you save it without any data on those tracks, they default on save and wipe out your settings. I have a pattern template with CC data on each track--not sure if its on each channel--I will have to check later.

This has worked for me, though I haven't used it in years. (Using the E-Mu more as a sound module than a sequencer. I have to shovel snow, but will check it out later.

I don't see why it shouldn't be working for you. Maybe I will upload some of my patterns in a little while.

Re: Pattern Channel Assign

In the Files section, I uploaded so sample pattern templates designed to send midi data from a Command Station Sequencer to external gear. I took them from files I had stores; so, if I have the correct ones, here's what they do:

All Ext. mid
This one has dummy data (CC7 = 127) on all tracks to preserve the external channel assignment. T01 is assigned to C01A ext, T01 is assigned to C02A ext, . . . T16 is assigned to C16A ext.

External~ProtX~B.mid
Is similar to the one above, except each track is assigned to the corresponding channel on port B--all ext. On the version in my P2500, it looks like all CC7s are set to v=110, plus there seem to me some tracks enabled and some altered knob data. I am not sure if the template I posted has this data.

MultiB ext.midi
The version on my P2500 has T01 assigned to C01B ext. I am not sure if the template I posted is the same or if it has T01 assigned to MultiB ext. Only T01 has CC7 data.

Anyhow, this should give you an idea of various types of external channel assignments you can do. I am not familiar with the Virus line, but if you can set up voice one to receive data on midi channel 1 and voice to to receive data on midi channel 2, you should be able to get you Command Station to do it.

Assuming you are using Midi Port A for your external gear, try assigning T01, T02, T03, and T04 all to Channel:01A ext and T05, T06, T07, and T08 to Channel:02A ext. Of course, you need to have dummy data on those tracks (and possibly channels) before you save the pattern, or the tracks will revert to the default track settings. I add the dummy data using the EVENT pattern editor--just hit repeat to insert an event.

Hope this helps.

Steve

RE: [xl7] Re: Pattern Channel Assign

Steve-

Thanks a lot. I didn't see your patches but I did the CC data trick and
that worked great. The trade-off is the track lights indicate that there's
data there, but that's life.

Have you ever had any luck reliably connecting Prodatum via the USB port or
do you edit your patches via the LCD?

Thanks,
Scott

Glad the CC trick worked.

I use WixXP (the soon to be murdered WinXP). Ever since SP2 or SP3 I have not been able to get the E-Mu usb drivers working. I am sure I wrote about that issue a couple of times. I recall using e-loader1.1 with the usb drivers. I am not sure I used them for anything else.

Oh--the sample external patterns are in the Command Station Data folder.

I think I was able to get eloader working on linux with wine. Ill try it and make sure when I have more time. I think eloader only saves patterns and not presets?

Re: [xl7] Re: Pattern Channel Assign

2013-12-16 by Scott E. Whitehead

Eloader works fine for me. Personally, I'm looking forward to having a gui for the patch editor.

Funny you should mention linux, when Steve mentioned his other posts I started to go back through the archives. There's a mention of Linux support so I dual booted over to linux to see if I could get lucky. But I don't know the first thing about wine, so I never got past the USB driver. Also, installed XP today, but service pack 3, so no joy.
Its really not the end of the world to have to go get a USB to MIDI bridge. But having just one cable to the PC and not having to plug and replug would be great. Routing through my other synths that support both connection types is just too problematic.
Thanks,
Scott
