Hi folks

i am looking to start a basic system using 200e modules and was
looking for some advice regards modules.I have intial funds to buy a
central 6 panel boat ( central unit from the 18 unit system i beleive)
but have to now decide which modules to start with and which will also
allow me to start tweaking. The system is being bought for 1 reason ,
special fx , ambient noodles and all sorts of random and ems synthi
style fx .With this in mind i have zoned in on the modules

250e
261e
266e
291e
210e ( will this offer me more potential for unusual cross mod
patching?)
227e (is this essential for starters for gett8ing audio out to a
mixer ?)

but as i have limited space i wondered if anyone can advise on what
would make a handy 6 panel system .I am especially after randomised
sequences etc,and aquatic sfx.

A quick further question , is the 260e worth buying aswell as the 261e ?
i kind of wondered if it is better to have both types initially or
quite how they differ?

My understanding of modular synths is with using a few basic doepfer
modules so i'm slightly our of my depth full with some of the modules
like the quad control function processor etc and how usefull they would
be in a small system like this.My logic says get the arbituary
sequencer / the source of uncertainty / 3 osc and are should be well
away way in terms of cross mod fx / randomised sfx etc.

any advice would be cool and much appreciated

Hi Matt,
I began in a similar direction; wanting to accomplish
in small as pssible system, I think initially I was
tinking of a 250e/261e291e/292e/281e in a 6 boat.
Upon discovery of the planned discontinuation of the
259e I panicked, and escalated the system to include
that module as well, in a joined pair of 4 boats,
leaving open space for a final module to be decided
later on. My initial system was somethimg 6.5k, went
to 8.6, but I'm extremely happy, well worth the
difference.
This configuration has effectively satisified my
personal endeavors completely. I still have a handful
of nonsense going on at:
twango.com/channel/donh.public
mostly to assist others if they are in a similar
space.
Btw, the titling scheme draws from the mental health
industry's diagnostic and statistic manual, safer to
diagnose my pieces rather than friends and such. It's
handy and it works for cataloging.
The final module is likely a toss up between a 210e,
225e, or the SOU.
Being a longtime Synthi user, I'm intrigued by the
210, though the 225 makes good pragmatic sense.
I can't imagine anyone here not wanting a 261e.
As far as Waveform generators, I really love both, but
if I were forced to choose just one the 259e is more
preferrable to me.
If you enjoy a unigue ambiguity between analog and
digital, it's well worth begging for.
The 291, when outpouts are fed back as inputs makes
quite an intense amount of racket too!
Good luck!

[200e] re:starting a system advice

Matt: to start with, the system modules you have listed below add up
to 8 panel units (the 227e and 250e are both 2 units), so you're over
the limit for the 6-panel boat. I also don't think it's essential to
have the 227e in a small system like this, as you can easily patch
the audio outputs from any module directly into an external mixer - I
think the 227e is more useful in a larger system.

The 210e is also less essential, I think - it's really designed to
route audio and control voltages to different destinations, and is
most useful as a way to be able to store and recall cable routings
with the use of the 225e Preset Manager. Because you can stack
control voltage cables, and you have some audio multiples in the
system already, and won't have a 225e, I think you could better use
the space for other modules.

The 250e, the 261e, 266e, and 291e are all good choices for what you
want to do, and bring you up to 5 panels. You might want to consider
the 297 as an additional effects processor (particularly for "aquatic
fx"), or another 261e so you have more audio sources for
cross-modulation. The 260e might be a good alternative to the 261e,
as it's also an audio generator, but it's perhaps a little more
limited than the 261e.

The 281e Quad Function Generator is essentially 4 envelope generators
- good for envelope-type control voltages, obviously, but perhaps
less useful without the 292e Quad Dynamics Manager (basically, 4 VCAs
with filters). They're both essential in a larger system, of course.

Your chosen modules won't fit in six spaces. If I was making a 6 unit system for drones and squiggles, I would start with a three-space-base of a 261e waveform generator, a 281e function gen, and a 292e low pass gate. This trio pretty much defines the "Buchla 200e sound". To that base I would probably add a 225e midi interface, a 291e triple filter, and a 266e source of uncertainty.

This system has no sequencer, but there's an awful lot out there in the MIDI / software world in that regard. The size of the 250e (and the 249e before it) precludes it for a small system, imo. Even if you want fairly "outside" sequencing, there are quite a few choices, these days.

The 227e mixer module is overkill for a small system.I would take the output from one channel of the 281e.

>A quick further question , is the 260e worth buying aswell as the 261e ?

I would get a second 261e, if I had the space. The 260e is pretty much a "special interest" module. In fact, does anyone on the list use a 260e? If so how do you end up using it?

The 281e Quad Functio Generator is _really_ important. You need to clock the 266e to get anything out of two of the three sections, and a section of the 281e is a logical candidate for a clock source. The 281e provides envelope generation, as well as LFOs for the system. You can always use more LFOs and envelopes.
