Does anyone know if the CZ1000 can receive velocity sensitive
messages. I know that the inherent keyboard is NOT touch-sensiive,
but I was wondering if I would have TS control using an external
keyboard.

Nope...only the CZ1 is capable of this.

It will respond to Control Change #7, (Volume) so that might work if
you're trying to sequence in some dynamics.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to get a manual and MIDI
implementation chart for a CZ1000 please?

Many thanks

Got mine at the weekend and am having fun already.

There WAS a PDF copy of the CZ101 manual in the files section at
yahoogroups... wasn't there? It's gone now! The MIDI implementiona
chart is in there, and it's the same as the CZ1000.

Re: CZ101 Manual; Casio MIDI Guide (sysex) online in html format

While looking for the CZ MIDI Guidebook PDF, I discovered I have a CZ-
3000 PDF. Also, I have something called CZ101_manual-small.pdf.

I'd upload them to Files, but there is only 180K of space left.

I tried doing an internet search, but didn't find them yet. I
searched CZ 101 pdf. Give it a try. Oh yeah, looks like lotsa folks
selling manuals.

BTW: It looks like someone in UK created an easy to read version of
the Casio CZ Guidebook. It looks like the material is from the
manual, with original notes in html format.

http://www.bluebear.org.uk/studio/cz101/cz101midi.html

It might be easier than using the PDF.

Hope this helps.

I created a smaller file size version of the cz 101 pdf. If you need it let
me know and I can email it to someone to place online.

Just for the hell of it (I was practising html tables) I converted the
CZ-1000 MIDI Implementation chart to html and put a copy of it in the

CZ1000

2004-06-18 by Rocky Rodenbach

Hi. I'm new to this group. I thought I'd share a story about my CZ1000.
I bought it in 1985. I had a couple keyboards before that though. But the
CZ was the first that had full size keys and I used it the most. It's a
pretty amazing synth, the presets are for the birds, but with an 8 stage
envelope generator, you could really make some very interesting sounds.
It's been under my bed for the last five to six years, and when I pulled it
out and tried using it, I found it had given up to ghost. Everytime I turn
the power on, all the lights blink on and off rapidly, and a constant tone
is produced, it changes in pitch each time I power it on. I'm not too
broken hearted, it's had a rough life, it's been dropped a few times, so I'm
not surprised. I was thinking about buying another one on Ebay, I may do
that. I have patches I've written if anyone's interested.

Amazing - that's exactly what happened with my CZ-101, to the letter! I gave up and threw mine away (nothing could get it working) and I found a nice CZ-1 for £85 on www.loot.com. Exactly the same architecture, but with 16 or 8 voices, 5-octave velocity and after-touch sensitive full-sized keyboard, mod wheel, onboard chorus, sustain pedal and 128 (or is it 256?) user memories. I have even used it as a MIDI master keyboard with a piano module (it's far more portable than my Studiologic SL-880 and of course can produce some killer Hammond and combo organ sounds by itself). By the way, I have a complete ring binder full of patches I've written, ranging from Crumhorn to Vibraslap, along with Trash Pad, Bland Sax, Mellotron Strings (which cut out after 8 seconds just to make you play it like a real 'Tron), Jah Skank, Hohner Pianet T and the best Grand Piano sound you're likely to get from a CZ (not very convincing).

Re: [CZsynth] CZ1000

2004-06-19 by Rocky Rodenbach

That's funny. I wonder how common this problem may be? I remember I wanted a CZ-1 but they were way too expensive at the time. I just bought a Yamaha DX7 on Ebay, I don't have it yet, but wanted to get one because they're such classics. Right now I'm using a Casio CT-700. The strange thing is, I can't find any information online about it! It's almost like it never existed. There's info for CT630, CT 670, etc, but only a real brief mention of it on google. It's a nice keyboard, 5 octave, 12 note poly. The polyphony is what I look for the most in a keyboard, you can't do much with 4 notes for example. '
I have a least a dozen patches I've written, most are pretty exotic. My main goal is to try and make a sound that doesn't compete with other instruments like the guitar, and still has the character of a keyboard. In other words, I don't want electric guitars sounds, just something that you can tell it's a keyboard and still has some grit to it.

Hi, thanks. That's an interesting idea! That very well could be the case. I had taken it apart at one time to try and clean the inside on the LCD display, I know, not a good idea! Anyhow, I had a heck of a time getting it back together, the inside is crammed with circuit boards, with not a millimeter to spare! It worked fine for years afterwards, it wasn't until last year It wouldn't work. I kind of miss it, like I mentioned, I still may pick one up. Also, I just remember, I left the battery's in it for over a year and the inside of the batt compartment got all corroded.

Dumb question but did you try resetting it (with a paper clip or
toothpick) by pressing the reinitialize button located on the
underside of the CZ1000?

Not dumb at all!! Very good question. I just tried that, and no affect what
so ever. The LCD doesn't work at all, not even garbage characters. All I
can do with it is turn it on, and all it does is emit different low level
tones each time I reset it. Thanks for the tip, but I think it's seriously
toasted.

CZ1000

2012-02-18 by tellito82

Well i started playin garound with the cz1000 and im curious to see if anybody knew of a sound that might give me the old DX horns sound. Im playing with the two presets of trumpet and brass ensemble but i still get a tinny sound. Im looking for a richer thump to it like a dx sound, any guidance to the correct area paremeter or even sound would be great. im open to all suggestions for this thanks for the help if anybody has any ideas, just as a reference i purchased this on a whim since it was dx rival. According to lore a band in the 80's recorded an album with the Casio "tuba" sound, and all people could come close to is an dx sound. So i figured id give it a shot. FYI its regional mexican music Duranguenze if anybody is curios of what the application would be. That genre of music instead of a bass uses a keyboard/tuba. THanks for your time!

Re: CZ1000

2012-02-18 by fulfil_objective

It sounds like a great idea to use a CZ-1000 for a synth tuba. I don't have any perfect advice, but I appreciate the quest for a great, fat sound.

One idea is that, since a tuba sound only needs to by monophonic, you can combine two sounds. Use "Tone Mix" to find two sounds that work together, and help each other out. It might be a brass sound and bass sound. Then work on changing the levels. The downside to Tone Mix is you lose polyphony, but that won't matter for tuba basslines.

My second idea is that you use some kind of external effect to warm up the sound.

My third idea is that you need some more brass sounds than just the ones that are built-in. Try grabbing some of the patches from this page:

http://www.reocities.com/SunsetStrip/Frontrow/4877/cz101.html

Get the ones that are for CZ-1000, figure out how to load them, and then play them to see if any are better for your purpose.

Lastly, the thing about Casio tuba sound from the 80's... Casio had a lot of different hardware varieties over the years. They had analog, square wave, PCM, and digital to name a few. Only knowing the brand name (Casio), you can't say for sure what type of sound it was. I can imagine one of Casio's more analog early keyboards making a good tuba sound when amplified.

Hope that helps somewhat!

There is an old modification out there that uses the APO switch to access all 32 sounds on a cartridge. I did it to both of my CZ-101s, and it works great!

       OK, I will take some
 pictures.
 Today I have
opened it and start to disassembly it. It's not so easy
as boards are connected by flat plastic cables which are
soldered on both ends... grrrrr... so unpleasant and service
unfriendly. Similar way as on cheap Casio portables from
that times - I did cleaning and repairs of my MT65... at
least they have used there flat cables with relatively
thick wires inside. Here it's much more fragile, just
thin foil and inside metal traces. I have to be very careful
not to break some. If so, better to desolder it and use
standard wires. The reason for this is they wanted to save
money...that's why there are no multi pin
 connectors.
 Inside I
have found some rusty screws, and also some pieces of rust
on some metal parts. Will clean everything after full
 disassembly.
 I
couldn't find any problem with power connector,
there's no cold solder, no cracks... Probably just the
connector needs good cleaning inside, and adjusting the
contact. High humidity here in Japan during summer is guilty
 for the oxidation...
 Also contacts for cartridge had
green color from oxidation, I had cleaned it very carefully
 with fine sand paper.
Another problem was with cover of
cartridge slot. It was fixed inside with transparent sticker
tape, and the reason was that spring which should keep it
closed was broken. Evidently previous owner didn't use
cartridge. So I made new spring from guitar string, works
perfectly now. I have RAM-3 cartridge, originally for my
CZ3000 but there it can be used only for data backup. CZ1000
offers direct access to 16 programs so I will use it now
with this instrument, it's more flexible. Still I have
another rare cartridge which offers 4 banks.
Keyboard is quite OK, it doesn't
 need cleaning.
 So now
I have to order LED display and replace the original one. It
 will take some time...

Very interesting! Could you post pics of your
adventures as you try to "revive" this vintage

I have found a nice looking CZ1000 like a new one in the
 nearest
recycle shop, in junk department proclaimed as
 non working. Price was
4.6 USD, so I couldn't leave it there.

Using proper adapter at home I
could make it work on the first switch
on. I'm quite sure that instruments have a
soul and can feel they are
in good hands. So far so good.

 Everything is OK, but power
 connector board is probably somehow
moving, or there's a cold contact on the
 connector itself - when I
move with it, sometimes instrument switches
 off. Opening the
instrument will probably take more time than
 the repair :-)

 There's
a small coin battery in the holder inside the battery
compartment, it looks like previous owner did
 this modification to
keep data when power off. I don't like
 similar amateur looking mods so
will think twice if to leave it there or
 remove.

 The next step will
be replacing the display for modern one with LED
backlight as I did with my CZ3000.

 Merry Christmas!
