flashing power light problem on cz1000?

2003-02-18 by evansobel <evan_motu-mac@earthlink.net>

i've had my cz 1000 forever. i think i had this problem once like 8
years ago...anyway,

the LED above the power button keeps flashing. within a few
minutes of turning it on, the keyboard turns off. the "auto off"
switch is turned off.

i would think it was a case of dying batteries except it's plugged
in.

i did a rehearsal with it this afternoon for maybe 2 hours and i
think it didnt flash for most of it. then towards the end i think it
was flashing, but it wasnt turning off until i went back to play
more a few hours later.

any ideas? i hope my old beast isnt dying a slow stupid death!

thanks!

Hi Evan,

first of all I would turn the synth upside down, shaking it and so on
and see if it's get worse, maybe a wire or connector isn't connected
properly anynore...
After that I would open the synth and check if everything is in
place, de- and reconnect (and maybe carefully cleaning) all
connectors since it could be a connection problem caused by oxidation
and looking if all cables are ok and on the right place.
Has the CZ1000 a display backlight? In case of my CZ-1 the backlight
had a short ciruit with the metall cover of the display and when I
was playing it caused the synth to hang up and sometimes even lose
its patches...
Another thing to check is if the problems start when the synth is
getting warm or the Led starts flickering even from the start...

I have seen this before and I think if the adapter isn't plugged into the
jack all the way (or the jack is bent like it is on mine) then it will drain
the batteries when it doesn't get a good connection. But if you have no
batteries in it, then I have no idea why it was doing that.

hi all,

thanks for the replies :)

the light isnt really flickering. the flashing is periodic, like the cz
is trying to be tell me something.

i could swear that the one time i read the manual a long time
ago (i must have seen a manual in a store somewhere and read
it real fast), i read that this flashing stuff means something. like
you turn on the keyboard while holding down a certain key and
the keyboard goes into some mode or something and you get
this flashing light.

can anyone out there with a cz-1000 or cz-101 manual verify this?

peace from brooklyn,

evan

There is a switch on the side that, when set, automatically powers down the CZ1000, when not in use for 5 minutes or so. That may be it. Or, it may mean low batteries.

I think it means the batteries are low. Here's a blurb from the CZ1000
manual:

"When the batteries begin to wear out, the power indicator will star
to flash. If this occurs, please replace all 6 dry batteries with new
ones as soon as possible."

In order to clear any bugs that can occur in the memory during battery
replacement, be sure to press the P button with a pointed object when
the time that has elapsed since removal of the old batteries is more
than 10 minutes. Pressing the P button causes the 16 sounds set in the
internal memory before shipment to be recalled. At the same time, any
new tones you have set in the internal memory will be cancelled, so
please be careful."

(the P button is on the bottom, near the battery compartment.)

thanks peter - yup i know about the switch, i forgot to mention it
was one of the first things i checked

im gonna replace the batteries a little later, hopefully it's just that.
i still dont understand why it would turn off with it plugged in..

Unfortunately, no, just old-fashioned paper. I may try to digitalize
it someday, since it seems that nobody else in the world has. I've
looked.

i just put new batteries in my 101. a few minutes later the light is flashing. the ac adapter plug was not contacting properly. i wiggled it a bit and it stopped.i always thought the flashing light meant low batteries too.
now i'm wondering if it indicates a bad ac connection too. maybe i've got corrosion in the battery compartment from leaky batteries and that stops them from doin' their thang. that's happened before with my other cz.

I've had my CZ-101 since 1983. I lost the original power supply years
ago. There are a number of different sized power plugs available that
will fit into the CZ's power jack. I don't know exactly which size
was used on the original, so I've had to experiment with a few
different sizes to find one that will work. My findings are that some
of the sizes are 'close enough' to use, but can cause the center pin
on the keyboard to 'open' if wiggled the right way. My power LED
flashes when this happens. I have to be careful with the plug I'm
using as it will disengage if I'm not paying attention while moving
the keyboard around. Just a thought that might help here.

I bought my PS at Radio Shack for about $15. To keep it secure in the CZ, I bent the center pin slightly. It works fine.

Make sure you have the correct polarity on the plug from the PS.

The polarity isn't labeled on the keyboard. It just says 9V.
That is the other maing thing that you need to know when buying a power
supply.
