VZ envelope clicking

VZ envelope clicking

2003-07-18 by crustypaul

I'm new to this list so forgive me if this has been covered before
but i couldn't find it in the archive.
On a VZ10M/HS2E is it possible to stop the annoying click at the
start of a note without slowing down the envelope attack? You can
produce some evil sub bass with this thing but its totally useless as
every time i trigger the sine wave i get a big click on the front. Is
this just my machine or do they all do this? Its a major pain in the
arse.
Any ideas would be helpful.

I don't think it's a typical behaviour, can't remember having that
problem with my VZ-1. Are the presets reacting the same way, maybe it
has to do with the parameters settings...

Just some thoughts of what I'd do ....

I know you don't want slower envelopes-
but do try adding a value of 1-5 for the attack time to see if the
clicks go away.
The added time may just kill the click (and you might not even notice
the slower attack).

Also- see if you are modulating something with an Envelope "spike "-
that could cause the click.
(for instance- a modulating envelope with 0 attack - high level - and
super fast decay).

are you starting from an initialized patch?

There shouldn't be clicks when notes start because the VZ restarts the
phases of the waveforms when a voice is triggered. But if you've got, say,
a spike somewhere else in the envelope, or a hard attack with a slight
delay, or an instant-off release, or something like that, then it can
produce a click because the amplitude goes instantly up or down in the
middle of the waveform cycle.

slowing the envelope down is the only way to get around clicking. It
doesn't mean the envelope has to be slow, just not *instant*.

It sounds to me as if the machine isn't starting the waveform from a
zero point. Even if i use an initialized patch with only one
line/module then the sinewave has a click on the front end. Slowing
the attack down just makes the click slightly quieter but only cuts
it out completely when the attack is so slow its unusable for bass
sounds etc.
The same problem is apparent on a lot of the preset sounds (the harp
sound clicks so much it would be impossible to ever use) but not all
of them.
Anyone got any idea what could be going on?

This could be a problem with the midi-cable, I heard from ppl.
getting humm or klicks if they use a midi cable that is grounded on
both sides...

I just checked my VZ init patch by recording it into soundforge. There is a
perceived sort of click sound, but the waveform does start at zero. You
could check yours similarly..

You could try using 2 envelope stages for the attack to change the shape of
it slightly. I haven't tried this, but making stage 1 faster or slower than
stage 2 might help, and messing with the level for stage 1 (though too high
will give the same effect as just using stage 1 for the attack phase, and
too low will just delay the note- maybe ~70 would be a good place to
start?)..
