Not downsized, but different. The TX81Z has 8 waveforms, and the DX-7 has
only one. But the TX81Z has 8 algorithms, the DX-7 has 32.

Re: [CZsynth] CZ101 and YAMAHA TX-81Z

2004-10-09 by Daniel Araujo

The TX81z has similar sounds to the DX7, but I often hear the DX7 sounds
warmer, which I, being a former owner of both, agree. This is apparently
due to the 4-operator (oscillators?) architecture of the TX81z, while
the DX7 has 6 operators (per voice). If you want to warm it up a bit you
can always add some chorus or OD/distortion to it.
Also, the TX81z has 8-voice polyphony and it's a module, a keyless
version of the DX11.
According to vintagesynth.com, the sounds of the CZ series are very
similar to those on the DX line. (I never really played a CZ, only heard
some samples. I'll eventually buy one of those cute CZ101's, hehehe)

Hi Daniel,

compared the DX7 (in my case a TX802) the TX81z sounds a bit thinner, is having
less punch even when using about the same settings with the same amount of
operators.
Even so both synthesizers use phase modulation (but Yamaha called it FM and Casio
Phase Distortion), a CZ sounds substantially different. I bought the CZ-1 1986
while I got the TX81z in 1987 and in the mix I'm always able to tell them apart.
Same technique, different implementation and different features, not all
subtractive synths sound the same as well.
The Casio VZ is closer to the DX7 architecture wise, but sound wise it's still
it's like comparing a Moog to an Oberheim... ;)

They will probably both be okay, though you may want to look for a TX802 and
Casio CZ-1 as alternatives if you can find/afford them. They are a bit more
advanced, and sound nicer.

With all due respect, the CZ-1 sounds identical to the CZ-101 (I have owned
both). The difference lies in the power and size of the instruments - the
CZ-1 has a full-size, 5-octave keyboard, twice the polyphony and sustain and
volume pedal facilities. The only differences which might affect the sound
are a variable modulation wheel, velocity and after-touch and an on-board
chorus effect.

I'm not sure what Balkan bagpipes sound like, but I have a pretty good CZ Crumhorn patch which I'll upload as a PDF some time.

the avantage of a TX81Z is that it is capable of different (microtonal)
scales. so if you local music has to be played with different scales than
the "normal" western mean tone. the TX is for you, NOT the cz.

That's actually what I meant. Sorry if it wasn't clear.

Re: [CZsynth] Re: CZ101 and YAMAHA TX-81Z

2004-10-11 by Simon Beck

A Crumhorn has a wonderfully buzzy yet musical sound. Imagine a completely untamed bassoon playing in its upper register, or maybe an oboe played through a fuzzbox. A consort of Crumhorns (soprano, alto, tenor and bass) being played together makes a really nice sound, and one which the CZ can emulate quite well.
