Casio CZ Series - Sound Synthesis Handbook

2007-03-17 by Fulfil Objective

Hello nice people,

Does anyone have a PDF of the "Sound Synthesis Handbook"? I believe
it was one of the three manuals that shipped with a Casio CZ-101. The
other two were the operation manual and the "Sound Data Book".

I'd like to get it because I'm trying to make some new patches for the
CZ-1 and I'm trying to get a graphical idea of what "Rate" and "Level"
mean for each of the different envelopes.

I looked all over the web for it, by the way, but can't seem to find
it in English. I'm hoping someone has it on their hard drive. Or
maybe it's on the web and I just haven't been able to find it...

Hey FO,

I'm not sure this link will work but check out Joerg's Casiologie site.
There is a Vintage CZ forum where he has a lot posted. The CZ1000 and
CZ5000 "Sound Synthesis" versions are here.

http://www.jz-server.de/forum3/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewforum.php?22

He has a wealth of information on his site. Also I have added to this
groups files section 8 banks of CZ-1 patches that I made from taking
the best CZ5000 patches from over 2,500 patches I found all over the
web. I added velocity to the DCO, DCW, and DCA envelopes to make these
sounds morph, crossfade, wah, and a few other tricks. Plus a few of
these patches are of my own creation. I really like the CZ-1 for it's
expressiveness and the 8 stage envelopes. The envelopes can't loop but
hey that's the way they designed it.

Let me know if you want to discuss any of your programmimg adventures
or if you have any patches you would like to share.

Narfman ---Has anyone noticed we now have 100 mb of storage here?---

Narfman,

Thanks for your time and help. I've actually been to those CZ sites
multiple times in my search for all the documentation I can find. And
I have been reading the PDF manual called "CZ-5000 Summary". It is
fairly helpful.

There are two reasons I was looking for the CZ-101 "Sound Synthesis
Handbook".

1. I didn't know if it was exactly the same thing as the "CZ-5000
Summary". The difference in titles led me to believe they might have
different contents. I could stop looking for the "Sound Synthesis
Handbook" if I knew that it were 95% similar to the "CZ-5000 Summary".

2. It seems like there are a lot of "Sound Synthesis Handbooks" out
there, and a lot of CZ-101 fans, so I'm surprised there's not a
scanned version somewhere. That way I could cross-reference them to
my own satisfaction.

Thanks for the help. Do you know for sure that "CZ-5000 Summary" is
nearly identical to "Sound Synthesis Handbook"?

I don't think that any of these are the book you're looking for. I
found one on Ebay and it doesn't look anything like these other
books. Here's the item number: 270064492297 It's in the UK for
$4.99L.
Did you get to try any of the CZ-1 patches?

Narfman,

Yes, I have been using the patch dumps you made for several months
now, along with some others I found on the net, along with just making
sounds. I really appreciate the work you did on organizing them, and
that you made the work available to everyone.

I've been trying to find a way that I can do some similar work to what
you did. I want to go through the big sea of patches and group
similar ones together. This would make them even more useful to me.

What happens is I get to a part in a song where I want an organ voice,
so it would be nice to have a sysex dump that was 64 organs to choose
from. Other times I need a synth lead, so it would be nice to have a
dump of 64 leads. And so on.

So I'm currently trying to find a way that I can crack open the sysex
data and rearrange it to my liking. I talked about my false starts in
this message:

Howdy,

I think I have 2 sets of cz-101 books around here. I'll try and find
one and then you can tell me how and where to scan it to.

Re: Casio CZ Series - Sound Synthesis Handbook

howdy,

Rate and level are just that. how far up or down it goes, and how
long it takes to get there. on the DCO, this affects pitch. On the
DCF, it controls timbre. On the DCA, it controls volume. It's just
like ADSR, only with more control over the different stages,

Re: Casio CZ Series - Sound Synthesis Handbook

2007-03-20 by narfman96

Hey Mark,

You can send the jpg's to me and I'll make a PDF or you can make it
yourself by getting a PDF maker. There are several places for free
the best one being:

http://www.pdfforge.org

This is a free Sourceforge download and it works well for crunching
the file size to a manageable level.

Scan them using a grayscale setting so the grayed out areas come out
readable. You may have to play around to get it just right. Don't
save them in color they're too big. You want around 100Kb to 200Kb
per page. If it's a pain to scan it Kinko's does it here in the U.S.
but I'm not sure how much.

Thanks for offering! Narfman
