CLO destination

CLO destination

2003-09-29 by Simon

Just a note:
I think modulating the clock is great (diS is great too :))
but like i mentionned in OS 1.5, everytime you run over the
CLO destination, your original clock settings get screwed. You
either have to manually set all steps to 40 or start over and reset
the program.
Would it be possible to get back to the previous clock settings
when leaving CLO ?
Cause you'll see that it can be really anoying to reach for diS but
accidentally run over CLO and scew up your program.

As already posted to the group and to EX5Tech, OS beta 1.6 solves
this problem. Check the posts from the past couple days, or go
download beta 1.6 for yourself to give it a try.

1.6 does not resolve what i'm describing below.
diS / CLO are now seperated, but if run over
CLO it changes all clock settings and the only way
to get it back is to manually put all steps
to 40 or do a program reset.

My sincere apologies, Simon, I misunderstood.

Yes, you're right. If you set a sequencer destination to Clock Mod
(even if just "running over it") while running the sequencer, it WILL
change the tempo of the sequence to something other than the BPM
setting, unless all sequencer steps are set to 40. That's what it's
supposed to do though, of course. It changes the tempo, and the
tempo won't change back until you DO something to change the tempo.
I find it easiest to change the tempo back by tweaking the BPM
setting by a notch and then back again. Maybe Dave could program the
Reset to do this, too.

"I find it easiest to change the tempo back by tweaking the BPM

That does not work Ski. I tried it yesterday and just
now, and you only have 2 choices if you happen to run
over CLO and want to get back to the original tempo:
set all steps to 40 or do a program reset.
If you didnt save your program
before running over CLO, you will waste precious
time for nothing. I worked a couples hours with
1.6 yesterday and i found this behavior extremely
annoying and time consuming.

I really think a reset to the orignal tempo should be
done once you have left the CLO destination.

a different solution could also be to put CLO at the end of the mod
destination list.

Sorry that didn't work for you, Simon. I've done it several times
with v1.6, and it works for me. I'm not sure what we could be doing
differently.

If you haven't already done so, I'd highly recommend that you drop
Dave an email regarding the matter. I'm sure he'd be interested to
hear about it, and he may be able to provide an update or workaround
that addresses your concerns.

Re: [Evolver] Re: CLO destination

2003-09-30 by simon leclerc

Ski, it's my turn to offer you my sincere apologies.
I was tweaking the *Clock Divide* by a notch
instead of the *BPM* knob. I just tried your trick with the BPM
knob and it works fine...pheewww, i was starting
to wonder if there was something wrong with
my little Evilver :D

I still think the reset idea when leaving CLO
would be best, should i email DAVE or will he
hear about it thru this forum (or you) ?

Thanks for your help,

Simon

I have already raised this issue with dave. I think he is working on
a reset by pressing the reset button. I also passed on the idea to
have the CLO at the end of the list . . . don't know if he will buy
that though . .

Ravi

p.s. Dave is looking for some patches utilizing the new O.S.
features. If you have some good ones, send them to him by tomorrow.

Ok, thanks Ravi.
A reset with shift would be great.

p.s. Dave is looking for some patches utilizing the new O.S.

Re: Where is the OS beta page?

2003-10-07 by ski_ex5tech

Kevin, the link to the OS beta page at Dave's site has been listed in
about a half dozen posts to the group here. and it's also permanently
listed in a topic at the EX5Tech Evolver forum here:

http://www.ex5tech.com/ex5ubb_cgi/ultimatebb.cgi?
ubb=get_topic&f=23&t=000048

In the Yahoo group, you can always click the "Search Archive" button
at the upper right to find quick answers. At EX5Tech, you can click
the "search" link toward the upper right of a forum screen for an
even more detailed search.

The OS beta page is here:
http://www.davesmithinstruments.com/support/beta.html

(Note: If your email client or the Yahoo group splits the links
above onto two lines, you may need to copy/paste the link into your
browser address bar.)

Bookmark those pages! :)

Re: [Evolver] Re: Where is the OS beta page?

2003-10-07 by Kevin Harrison

ski,

I've waited 'til most of the bugs fixed before trying new OS.
I've had no problem with downloads from ex5tech site. I just couldn't
find anything pertinent at dave's site.
I probably missed the link somehow due to a deluge of mail from
motu-mac!

thanks.

Kevin.

Hey, don't feel bad about not finding mention of the beta on Dave's
site... there is none! The initial betas were not public knowledge,
and even the current beta is not quite what I'd call "full public".
Dave does not publicize the beta on the website, and is relying only
on members of our forums for testing. I think that probably gives
him a decent number of testers, yet while keeping the overall numbers
manageable. Keep in mind that Dave actually answers all his email
(amazing, because I have a horrible time keeping up with all mine)!
A truly public beta would probably overwhelm him! ;)

new OS?

2003-10-09 by Kevin Harrison

Hi everyone!

I've downloaded OS 2.0 from daves site, followed instructions in pdf
doc.using Mac OSX 'sysex librarian' (kurt trevis) to load PIC sysex
into Evolver. Evolver starts counting down for 3 secs then goes mental
and stops, at the end of this I still have OS 1.1. Anyone else
successfully dumped new OS using Mac OSX, what utility are you using,
probs encountered etc? I have facility to boot from Mac OS9.2 if
neccessary, if there's a better utility for this. Software I have
beside 'sysex librarian' includes Digital Performer and an ancient
version of StudioVision Pro. Please help I'm keen to get this done and
dusted.

Kevin.

Sorry, but I don't have a Mac, so I can't help you there. Can I
assume that you've already read the previous posts here, and the
topics at EX5Tech regarding 1) eliminating (powering off) other gear
in your rig that could be spamming your Evolver with extranneous MIDI
data, and 2) increading the size and number of the output buffers on
your Mac MIDI utility? I think those two things will probably solve
your problem.

Evolver and Mac users!

2003-10-10 by Kevin Harrison

Hi,

Is there any Mac user out there with Evolver successfully installed new
OS.2.0?
I need help, I have mac OSX and OS9.2.1. I have tried using 'SysEx
Librarian'
Evolver begins to quickly count down from 31 gets to 30 then flashes
cryptic display [-7-] and stops.
meanwhile 'SysEx Librarian' continues to send message. The end result =
  I still have OS1.1
If there is a way around this problem or another utility that works
(OSX or OS9)
please let me know. I have no extraneous MIDI data being transmitted
from other device(s),
and cannot find a way to adjust size and number of output buffers.
(not in 'Audio MIDI Setup' utility in OSX anyway).
Any help would be gratefully appreciated!

Hi,

not with 2.0, but successfully with 1.8 etc. Worked totally smoothly

Is the midi out from the evolver connected? Is there a handshake
operation? I don't know.

Sorry I can't be more help - it just worked straight off for me all 3
times I used sysex librarian to send the updates

Hi,

Have you tried dumping SysEx for OS 2.0 yet?

I am still unsuccessful, tried lots of perms. I have MIDI In & Out
handshaking.

Settings for Evolver I have are MIDI Clock = in, MIDI Dump = ALL, MIDI
Xmit  = ALL.

Altered prefs every which way in 'SysEx Librarian' to no avail.

Can you describe exactly what settings you have in Mac's 'AudioMidi
Setup',
Do I need to specify 'SysEx ID' for Evolver? Anything else I'm missing?

Whilst 'SysEx Librarian' is still sending message, Evolver seems
quickly finished with it (5-6 secs).

I don't think Edirol MIDI interface is at fault.

Need Technical help, but running out of ideas!

Kevin.

(as mentioned in prev. message, succesfully dumped SysEx on other
occasions using this setup).

Hey,

It my be the way you are unziping the files.
I use Zipit!. When I open the downloaded file in Zipit, the PIC_2-0.syx
has the " add/strip linefeeds" checked. Only this file is listed that way. I
have to manual tell it to not "add/strip linefeeds" from the "Zip" file
menu. Only that one file is listed that way. I tried to send it the other
way a couple times before I noticed that. The it sent fine.

soon,

ken

BTW, just a note: if anyone out there is using linux, you don't need to use
any application at all, you can just dump the files directly to the midi
device, like:

   cat PIC_2-0.syx > /dev/midi00
   cat DSP_2-0.syx > /dev/midi00
   cat bank_4.syx > /dev/midi00

[with appropriate waiting in between of course]

I'm using OS 9.1 and OMS SysEx Sender. No troubles at all, downloaded fine the first try. You can get OMS free from www.opcode.com.

Hi,

Many thanks to Dave, Alex, Ken and Harry. Successfully updated to OS2.0
this afternoon. I used Zipit (shareware) to uncompress files
(www,maczipit.com) and downloaded 'SysEx Sender' from a link at the
authors (Andrew Choi) blog site. This directs you to:-
www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/OMS_SysEx_Sender_PPC/download/mac. The
link at www.opcode.com seems to have closed down. I had to boot OS.9
from mac, to utilise software, but all went smoothly. Looking forward
to playing with new evolver!

Cheers!

Kevin.
