Triggering external samples progressively

Triggering external samples progressively

2005-02-27 by paleblustar

Hi everyone, I have checked the archive and couldn't find similar
posts- hope I didn't miss 'em.

Anyway, I have recently purchased a DTXpress III (Standard) and wish
to connect it, via midi, to a sampler. This is not a problem and poses
no issues.

What I am interested in is triggering different samples using the same
pad/cymbal. Not at the same time but in some kind of progression.
Basicall if I have 3 samples and hit the pad once it would trigger
sample #1, hitting it again would trigger sample #2, once more
triggering sample #3.

Does anyone know of a way of doing this - I am wondering whether it
would be something similar to the 'Pad Song' Function where it only
plays bars of a song, if these bars can have midi notes assigned then
this should do the trick but I'm not sure

Hope this makes sense and that I haven't bored you to death

Thanks.

Tris

Hi Tris,

Welcome to the group. I can only think of one way for you to make
three successive sounds on one pad--using, as you suspected, Pad
Song. At the bottom of our home page, you'll see a link for
dtxpressions.com. Follow it and click on Tips and Tricks. Go down to
the 19th item, Walking Bass Line. If I'm not mistaken, you might be
able to adapt this procedure to your needs, substituting your sampler
for the MIDI keyboard. Let us know how it comes out.

hi.. i think it should be done with the chase song option in the pad song mode. it will play the
sample bar by bar. after it's finished it'll start all over again.

Re: Triggering external samples progressively

Thanks for all of your help.

I thought it weas going to be something like that, well that's what I
thought anyway.

So far, I'm 80% there I think??

What I did was assign midi notes to two seperate pads, in this case
the cymbals, so that it would 'talk' to the sampler (at the mo I have
a Boss SP303 - but will be changing this soon to a Yammy A4000 I
think!) I then recorded the two cymbals in succsession (one bar each)
, when I play the song back using the play/rec button it triggers the
samples from the SP303, so far so good right, wrong!
When I assign the song to the 'pad song' function (ensuring that it is
set to 'chase' mode and also the correct song number) it doesn't play
anything at all, the display on the module registers the hit. I
thought the hard part would be to get the DTX talking to the SP303,
not the starting of the 'pad song'..... Help?

Thanks

Tris

Re: Triggering external samples progressively

Right then!!

Finally cracked it! The only thing missing was to correctly set the
MIDI receive channel on the sampler, bob's yer mothers brother it
works. This now means that I don't have to cart the whole DTXpress
around with my acoustic kit, just can use a few pads.

So for all that want to know what I did, here we go;

# Assign the individual pads to the correct MIDI note number that
correspond with the samples.
# Setup a song to record, ensuring that the number of measures matches
the amount of samples that are to be triggered.
# Record the pads, playing in time to the click, in order of the
samples in relation to each other.
# Give the song a name, for convenience.
# Setup a kit, assigning the recorded song as a 'pad-song' as per
instructions in the manual.
# Dependant on the amount of 'pad-songs' required set the MIDI receive
channel on the sampler device to the relative channel.

Thanks for everybody's support (namely liberatusvirus & satyaym for
confirming what I was thinking) to this E-Drum newbie, it is very much
appreciated.

Now.... where that Yamaha A4000 on Ebay! LOL

;)
