roland pm-1 monitor

2005-04-25 by fjcelauro

Any one have any reviews or comments about the PM-1 60W Roland
monitor? I have found no reviews on the product anywhere and I think
the Yamaha component monitors are terrible (MS50DR and MS100DR). the
100 is ok, but not for the price. I am not looking for something
loud, just something that adeuqately give you the "oomph" of a solid
boudle-bass line in terms of low-end sound. Party on everyone.

Frank,

I always liked the PM-3 as a home monitor. The subwoofer has nice low-
end punch to it. I've never heard the PM-1, but I doubt that you'll
get much bass response from a 60 watt two-way speaker. I'm afraid that
anything incapable of achieving some volume isn't going to give you
much low end either. You'll often see the PM-1 pictured with a Roland
handsonic component; such is probably its rightful jurisdiction.

I'm currently testing the Bose PAS system for use with e-drums. Bose
specs its subwoofer (my review sample has two) as going down to 40 Hz,
which is pretty accurate. I measure it as rolling off considerably at
31.5 Hz or so and losing any usefulness by 25 Hz. At even 40 Hz,
however, a considerable degree of power and size is necessary--more
than 100 watts, at least, depending on design variables. The Bose
would be overkill for many people who mainly play at home, especially
at a price of $2000. But any keyboard amp used for e-drums should go
down to at least 40 Hz to do kick drums and toms justice. People have
had good success apparently with the Behringer keyboard amps, which
are relatively inexpensive. Check the archives under "Behringer" for
some testimonials.

Frank,

At the bottom of the forum's home page, you'll see a blank box
with "Search group messages" beside it. Type "amplifier," "Behringer,"
or whatever else you feel is relevant to your query. The engine will
search month by month for posts that include that subject. If a
particular month hasn't anything, or if it has a few posts for you to
read but not enough, click "next" at the bottom or top right of the
headers to keep going back. If I recall correctly, "Behringer" should
only require a few months; "amp" will go back years.

The Peavey KB2 really packs a punch for your purposes. And it's small. Real quality here. I have one and can't get it to distort.

even compared to something like the behringer kx1200, $200 for 120 watts, that thing looks pretty tiny (the peavey) but the inability to distort sounds good, i'll see if they let me plug one in top the dtx at long island drum center. thanks

I has 2 channels as well (actually 3) and you can set all your cymbals and snare all the way to the right channel and adjust the bass and treble appropriately and set your toms and kick to the other channel and do the same. Works really well. I suppose you can do that with any amp though. I use it in my home and the walls shake. (well, not really, but close)

Ken,

Every small amp makes sacrifices. Where is the Peavey weak? My guess
is that it probably does some service to the mid-bass and upper bass
(from 50 to 100 Hz), as well as the mid-range, but doesn't descend to
the lower registers or into the upper treble.

That's what I found out as well but you can compensate for that by using both channels and adjusting left, center, and right settings in the module. Until I tried this, I could get the nice deep bass but the bright cymbal sounds were sacrificed. I never adjust it to the center channel. Lets face it, you're not going to get the same performance out of it as the larger Peavey amps but IMO it's the best one I've tried for playing in the house.
