Drop clutch

Drop clutch

2009-09-09 by psych_9_9

Hey guys,
I've been a long time list lurker, I've got a lot of useful information out of the group just my listening. But I come to have a specific question:

I have a DTXpress kit (orange module, not sure which version, 2 maybe) and an iron cobra double pedal. I'm not a metal player or anything, but I am working extensively on my foot vocabulary and dexterity.

I've been playing lots of patterns between my feet and hands, using the ride cymbal because the hi hat is open. I have a drop clutch for my real drums, but never get the opportunity to practice with those.

Is there any hacky mechanism I can use to close the hihats for double pedalage? I'm not afraid of soldering, or transistors if they fit into a solution.

Cheers
Cat

I am not sure quite what you are asking for. It is possible to make the hihat pedal play a kick drum for double kick pedal playing but I am away at the moment and cannot look up how to do it.

Keith.

Just edit the patch..
Swap the open hi-hat sound for a closed (or slightly open) hi-hat sound.
That way it doesn't mater if the pedal is up or down.

Sorry guys. I'll try and be a bit clearer.
My hihat pedal is set to mimic a hihat properly, it tracks open, sloshy, closed and pedalled fine.
I have enough pedals and pads to perform the double bassdrum function without 'stealing' the hihat pedal.
I don't need to convert anything into anything else.

I want to electronically add the facility of a drop clutch to get a 'closed' sound from the hihats when the hihat pedal is released, and to restore the hihat to 'normal use' on the next press of the hihat pedal.

I'm not suggesting this is possible without modifying the kit.
Any thoughts?

Are you using a new RHH135? If so, I think a regular after market drop clutch would suffice, however, I don't know if this would damage the pad or not...

hi cat,
interesting question you've got here. i remember trying this before but its more of changing the drum kit when i hit a pad. but then again that means you lose one pad for that requirement.
if you have some money to spare, why dont you try the cobra clutch since youve mentioned you're using iron cobras. this might also help you on your foot dexterity. :-)

There will be a way of adding a toggle switch to the hihat cable but I am away for the next 10 days and don't have access to the circuits. There may be a hihat pedal circuit in the files section. You will need to connect either the tip or ring to the sleeve to mimic a closed pedal - I cannot remember which.

Keith.

I think I want a bistable flip flop arrangement so it present the 'closed' resistance to the module when a 'button' has been pressed (i.e. I've dropped the clutch) but resets to normal operation next time the pedal is pressed. Does that sound likely? I've not managed to get a meter on the pedal yet to figure out what it does at different pedal positions.

Thanks
Caitlin

If you want a push-on/push-off operation you would just need the right type of push button switch - a mechanical flip-flop!

This doesn't match the operation of a normal drop clutch though.
They're struck to release the top cymbal into the bottom one (so the button is pushed to 'drop the hat' into the closed pedal output)
But the way the hihat is reset to normal operation is that the pedal is depressed, bringing the rod AND the clutch down, which clips back to the cymbal and pulls it up when the pedal is next released. (so it's registering a pedal press which needs to reset the flipflop, not a button press)
