Re: [DTXpress] Amplifier

Hello Jelmer and welcome to the group. The subject of
amplifying the DTXpress is one that there have been a
lot of posts on, and there are many views on what is
the best. If you are just using it a home, some
people amplify it through their home stereo system.
At the other end of the options is a full sound
system, with many options in between. As a first step
to hear some of the different options, try searching
the archive for amp or amplifier - you'll find many
options and opinions. Walt

Amplifier

2002-11-17 by Daniel

Hello Everyone

I wanted to let everyone know that I just bought a new amplifier for
my Dtxpress.
I decided to get the Behringer KX1200 and seems to work well so far.
I did not had the pleasure of trying the Roland KC500, so I am not
sure if to compare both of them. Volume seems good, very good base
amd highs.
Just wanted to send some feedback. A while back when I posted the
question about amplification no responses came from the Behringer....

Thanks

Daniel

Perry,

I use one of these:

http://www.thomann.de/gb/the_box_pa502a_aktives_fullrangesystem.htm

Keyboard amp/speakers are often recommended with the Behringer KX1200
being one of the cheapest. There are some Peavey fans out there as well.

A discussion earlier may offer some alternatives:

Re:Amplifier

Hi Perry
I use 2 yamaha msr400's... They are 400 watts and cost used about $450 each. This also allows me to use a Yorkville ps210px sub woofer as well. on our rig we have a tascam we use for recording and everything goes into it and is mixed right there then it goes out to the sub woofers and then to the msr400 powered speakers. This allows us to have stereo drums(and guitar) which can be a very interesting effect!

I would have used mackie or yorkville or osb or any of the popular brands, it was the price that drew me to this system(used msr400 and used ps210px locally) Music shops like Long & mcQuade rent these things out by the dozens and will sooner or later put them out for sale used. These powered speakers can be found with lower wattage. I saw 100 watt and 75 watt units for much less... even a set of computer speakers(really low wattage) could be used too if you're low on cash! You just need a plug that will convert 1/4" to 1/8" to match up the plugs.

I did my first [small] gig with some Logitech Z-2300 speakers: 120W on
the sub-woofer, 80W on the satellite speakers. I didn't get any
complaints!

Hi Perry!

What do you use for amplification normally? I mean in your "workspace" or on "gigs". I'm confused with the "band practice" thing.

I have used, and highly recommend, a Behringer 3000FX, It's a keyboard amp that pumps out an awesome 300 watts of power, believe me you wont need that much, but it's good to have. You can get one for under $300. if you shop around. I have used it as a stand alone when we do shows that are too small for our large p.a. and have never had any complaints. Going thru your groups p.a. is an option as long as it can push out the power you need to get your high and lows. you have to pound this into some 'musicians' heads as they seem to think that they know what they have is good enough untill you blast their woffers out. Try everything that is suggested to you as some will not provide the bottom thump we all look for from our kick drum. Guitar center carries some good amps that they usually will let you carry to their drum room and plug in to try. Amps made for electronic drums such as Roland amps are good but are priced way too high for most,
Behringer gives you all you need for half the price ! Good luck and get back if you have more questions...

Re: [DTXpress] Amplifier

My stuff is a bit more expensive (not by a lot, I think my total cost was around $700.00) and will give you a bit more stuff to tote but it is awesome! I have the right & left audio outputs plugged into a Behringer B2092A Studio Subwoofer.. Nice box, 360 watts with a built in crossover that I use to send the highs to a couple of Behringer MS-40's on \u201cear level\u201d stands. Check out Sameday music. I found the best pricing there. You will need "XLR" cables to hook everything up properly. Get those at Orange County Speaker (speakerrepair.com), best prices and selection on cables.

Using the one amp method you're thinking about you are going to get either muddy cymbal sounds or less bottom on the tom's and bass drum. I have sparkley highs growling toms and the bass shakes the house.

Hook it all up, dial in "Power kit" and you'll show John Bonham a thing or two!

Later
Mick

Perry,

I would suggest a 12" 2 way powered speaker for practice, 3 way 15"
for gigging. I have a 15" but for weekly practice I would like
something smaller and lighter. My 15" is a bi-amped 2 way and I would
say lacks a little mid range, although top & bottom end are good -
hence my suggestion of a three way. For gigging, get as much power as
you can for the bass. It doesn't seem to matter how much power you
have, you can still clip the bass amp if you like some rock "punch".

Keith.

Picked up a Behringer K3000FX. Seems to do the job. Even had to turn down the bass volume on the padal a little bit.

Perry,

and you have the equaliser on the K3000FX so you could balance the
mid-range if you find it a bit low. The DTXpress allows you to boost
the bass and treble but not reduce either, nor boost the mid-range, so
some sort of EQ on the amp/speaker is handy.

Keith.

Perry,

You might just need to select a different hi-hat voice. I found a
similar thing - when I used one speaker system I picked a nice hi-hat
sound but it sounded totally different when I got my larger PA speaker
system and so had to find one that suited that better.
