Here's the quoted official response from headquarters about new
modules and kits:

"At this time there is no word or official release date of any new
electronic brains to replace current kits. Check with us in the
summer which new models of various products will be shown at Summer
Namm. If you have any further questions, please call us at (714) 522-
9000 or email us."

Mum's the word.

Ed,
Man...you'd think it was a matter of national
security!!! Wonder why they are being tight lipped?

Jade,

I'm not at all surprised. It's like that with every company. None of
them wants the other to know what they have up their sleeve. It's
all about getting the upper hand on the competition. I trust you got
my message about the Ludwig hat?

Because if we knew how good the new product was going to be we'd all
cease in buying the currently available product to save for the new
one! Well atleast thats why I hope they're being like that! :)

UNH,

That, too. But in this case, they know that we know that something
is up. And nobody who's looking for product in the higher end is
going to be satisfied with the Xpress, anyway (no disrespect
intended; the dtxpress is a wonderful unit). They might well just
buy a Roland or a ddrum instead.

RE: [DTXpress] new product

2003-04-23 by rdamon@mckinney-usa.com

Could it be that they believe that Roland might be coming out with a new
module (TD-12) and they don't want to let it slipout what features their
module has until the last moment? Perhaps, they are designing more of
PC-based system that allows total control of the module from a PC/MAC, and
the software side of the R&D has lagged behind the hardware side as it
happens in other manufacturing industries. The fact that they have not
provided any software with the DTXpressII that would provide even basic I/O
with a PC/MAC (you have to use a third party or freeware software program to
download/upload kits, etc.) , tells me they are not strong software people
in this area, and they would probably have to contract out-of-house for
software development. You'd be supprise at just how much of that is done in
the industry. (I can't give specific examples, due to confidentialty
agreements that we have with some internationally branded industries.)

Just a thought.

Oldguy,

I can tell you this much: The holdup on the new module was about
licensing difficulties. I don't know, however, whether the licensing
was for samples or for appended software. I'm hoping it was for
cymbals. But I'd say that the secrecy is a corporate competition
thing, as you suggested.

Re: [DTXpress] Re: new product

Ed,
I got your message about the Ludwig...I am debating
whether I should use a rack mounted HH stand...plus
the other factor is the size of the clamp on the
Visulite-that attaches to the HH. I guess I could try
out a standard HH stand from my dealer, and if it
doesn't work out, they will let me order a rack
mounted HH stand. the thing I am concerned about is
the fact that I am 5'3 and trying to position the
stand (if it is rack mounted) in a comfortable
position.

Re: [DTXpress] Re: new product

2003-04-23 by Jade

Ed,
Yamaha certainly could use some upgrading on their
cymbals and HH sounds...and it would be FANTASTIC if
we could download on our computers a particular drum
sound, whether it be cymbal, HH or any drum sound, and
then upload it to the DT module. Seems to me, because
the current DTX module is a computer (Martin's own
words), all it would take to "upgrade" our current DTX
brains would be a computer chip. The MidiKiti had
that capability-it is documented in my owners manual
for the Kiti. But, in the long run, if one were able
to upgrade the DTXII modules with a computer chip,
then Yamaha would loose out in sales of the new
DTXtreme module. I, for one, will be anxiously
waiting to see what is offered, and will probably buy
a new module, then try and sell my 2 DTXII
mods...STILL trying to sell the Midi Kiti....couldn't
sell it twice on ebay...and I see someone had one last
week on ebay, and last I looked, didn't sell
either...at least at the time, no one was bidding.

RE: [DTXpress] Re: new product

On the software topic, it has been over tens years since I did any VB
programming. But it would seem to me that if the kits data file of 972 bytes
(typical size) could be broken down into it's basic information (user kit
no., pad type, voices) that a simple windows interface could be written to
access/modify perimeters from some simple pulldown menu's. Has anyone tried
to tackle this?? Or is the data stream "encode/encripted" to prevent direct
manipulation?? Just curious.

Re: new product

Oldguy,

Someone was talking about devising one or altering another program
to perform that function years ago, I think, but it never
materialized. I don't think that it would represent much of a threat
to Yamaha. Do you?

Anyone who works for any sort of product company can answer that:

1. So the competition don't find out. Actually, this is largely
bogus, as everyone knows pretty much what everyone else is doing in
any niche industry. This is just to hide the real reason, which is...

2. To ensure people keep buying current models, since that's what
pays R&D's salary.

I have been "involved" (peripherally, not causally, I should
emphasise) with two companies that have had either large plants or
whole divisions close because of an incautious salesman letting
details of the new model slip.

Oh, geez. I guess I should have used a back channel of communications, since
I'm sure the Yamaha 007 spies are documenting everything that is posted
here. No doubt they have just activate an emergency response team of
lawyers, to try and nip this conspiracy to improve their product in the bud.
On the other hand, considering the amount of dollars I have personnally
spent on their stuff, this type of software should have already been
included and this should not have to be a topic of discussion here or
anywhere else!! The real shame is that I would have easy spent $100-$200
more per kit/module to get some of these simple extra features. The biggest
joke of the DTXpressII kit is that only one L-Stabilizer was provided with
the kit even though the kits comes with two cymbals. If our cost is $17 then
their cost was probably $3 in the quantities being sold. Bean counters
strike again.

Re: new product

2003-04-23 by liberatusvirus

Hey Stewart,

Can't argue with that logic. In this case, however, there's no
product for the potential Yamaha buyer to fall back on. The
DTXpress, as good as it is, is not the flagship product that I asked
about, and in the e-drum niche, the unavailablitity of, say, the
DTXtreme does not so much send someone to the DTXpress as to rivals
like Roland. It's a small world, and we sorta know what everyone is
doing, but the margins of ignorance, small as they are, matter to
our miniscule population.

By the way, here is an excerpt from an article about the capacity of
lawsuits to expose sensitive corporate secrets. It indirectly seems
to speak to the point:

"In the information age, ideas are the bread and butter of business.
The success of software companies, biotech firms and other
technology-related businesses is dependent upon keeping new
discoveries and business information secret. If, through exploratory
litigation, a company can find out what its competitor is doing
simply by coming up with frivolous charges, then intellectual
property . . . and the growth of the economy are at serious risk.

"Revealing companies' proprietary information and intellectual
property will harm consumers because it will discourage investment
in research and development . . . . If companies can learn about
competitors' best ideas . . . , businesses will be less likely to
document or even fund projects in the R&D phase."

Once I got frustrated over the small buttons on the module enough to
chart out the contents of a user kit syx file. So it's not encoded.
The file has distinct blocks of data for every pad and so on.

Finding out the structure of the file was quite a pain in the butt
though, fiddling with a kit parameter and dumping the file to a
computer to check out with a hex editor which byte has changed. I got
it charted out pretty nicely though, except that there's this one
byte that just changes between 0 and 1 and doesn't seem to represent
any real setting. Oh well... :)

And as every parameter except the kit name is just a numerical value
it was at times a bit puzzling to connect it with the setting value
that's visible on the module.

Didn't get around to coding a software for it yet though.

Hi guys I too felt that such PC software was missing and so I am currently developing my own Java application with a view to sharing it with the DTX forums.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
