Hi all,
Chris, good news that your kit is on the way. Looking forward to your impressions, etc.

Giles, did you figure out your playback issue?

Amplification:
You can find info on my Fender KXR100 in the Fender website (fender.com). This will tell you more than I can. When I first played the kit in the shop, they were running it through a small Roland keyboard amp and the clerk, who has a pretty thorough knowledge of e-drums, was adamant that the keyboard amp was the way to go. The small Roland sounded really nice. Synthesizers are so tricked-out that they require amps with full range from low bass to high treble and these are also the needs of drums. The Fender has a big woofer, a horn, 3 inputs with individual volume and a nice range of eq control. The other nice thing is that it has a headphone jack so that I can have the power of the amp along with eq, etc. The kit sounds amazing through it as do guitars, vocals, etc. It's almost a portable P.A.. I was able to pick it up slightly used for quite a bit less than new.

I did notice that keyboard amps tend to be more expensive than basic guitar amps due to the eq control and range of sound required. Definitely check music shops or e-auctions as they seem to be available.

Later,
Rick

What a difference an amplifier makes!

I picked up a little Crate amp so I could finally hear what the
DTXpress sounds like through something other than headphones. Was I
shocked!

I spent hours tweaking all of my custom kits so they were tolerable
through the amp. They sounded nothing like they did through
headphones. Granted, I don't have a good amp, but wow!

I suppose with a better amp that they would be ok for a small live
gig, but I'm just not happy with the amplified sound.

I just got back into drumming after a 15 year hiatus. I had figured
that I would upgrade my DTXpress some more, perhaps getting a better
kit altogether. But getting this amp just made up my mind. For
practice, the eKits are great. For live, you need wood :) My next
kit is going to be a small acoustic kit. I'll still swear by the
DTXpress for practice, though.

Hi

So, I took my new DTXPRESSIII to practice and we had smoke coming out
of the PA speakers. I think we broke them.

So we got thinking about the fact that we should each (standard rock
threesome) have some sort of combo.

To project a drum kit, though, it appears after some asking around,
that we need much more than just a standard guitar combo. We need real
highs and lows. A 15" speaker, a horn, maybe even a mid section too.

My local shop guy (he's a drummer himself) recommended a Peavey KB300,
but I can't seem to find one of those.

Who knows how much the Yamaha monitor system costs? And what do you
successfully use for amplification?

We're not gigging yet, just playing for our own enjoyment, but we've
reached the point where we need a better sound.

Cheers
J

The peavey keyboard amp is the best way to go in my opinion. I have the small one (KB2) and it will blow your socks off in the house.

The Peavey is a good choice to use. Myself, and I know of atleast one other, use the Behringer KX1200 keyboard amp. I know I'm very satisfied with it.

Thanks for all your replies. I have to say I'm favouring the
Behringer, mainly because it has three speakers.

My local shop, a Behringer dealer, questioned Behringer's reliability.
The chap said they sometimes go pop.

Does anyone else have any experiences of Behringer versus Peavey
reliability?

I've always been the doomsday guy when it comes to Behringer. The
company had an ongoing reputation for patent infringement and poor
quality control. A little investigation around the web will confirm
it. That said, however, I can't remember anyone with the Behringer
KX1200 amp having anything bad to say about it, and Stephanie has
waxe nearly poetic about its sound quality. (Don't let the fact that
she goes under the name "deafdrummmer" dissuade you.)

RE: [DTXpress] Re: Amplification

I have both a Roland KC500 and the Behringer KX1200. The KX1200 has a better
mid-range, and go head to head with the KC500, except for what I have
described as the "scream" range.(Where you scream at the top of your lungs
at someone standing next to you and the person looks at you like "What did
you say? I can't hear you.")

At the really high volume range the KX1200 starts to distort, where as the
KC500 keeps pace.

I use the KC500 for my drums and use the KX1200 tied to a cd/radio and use
it day to day for just listening to background music. I run it about 4 hours
a day/5 days a week and 10 hours a day/2 days a week(end) for the past 5
months and still sounds like the day I bought it.

Re: [DTXpress] Amplification

Peavey is by far the best, however if you happen to get a Behringer that is stable you will like it. Seems there is a lot of problems with a lot of them though and it's tough to get a good one. Make sure you can return it to the place where you bought it if problems arise. Search the messages on this list for Behringer for more info. You get what you pay for holds true for amps.

Amplification

Hi. Can anyone recommend amplification suitable for a DTXpress 4 kit. I
already have a Yamaha monitor system - so I am really looking for a
amplifier suitable for playing with a pop/rock type band and not having
to use their PA etc. Any suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks

It depends where you are based and how much you want to spend. I am
pleased with my PA203-15A from Thomann. I cannot find it on their web
site now, but this one is similar:

http://www.thomann.de/gb/the_box_pa502a_aktives_fullrangesystem.htm

I think several companies make similar things.

Keith.

Keyboard amps work well. I have a Roland KC-500. I think now they make the
KC-550.

Thanks Keith. Do you use only one of those powered speakers or two - to
get a stereo effect etc? (I already use a sound mixer) Also, I have
looked at the Thomann website and they do "The BoxPA302". I was
wondering what the difference was as it is a little cheaper! Thanks

I just have one speaker, so I feed it into two of the inputs with a Y
splitter and mix them. Two speakers would be nice but they wouldn't
fit in my car with the drums as well!

The PA302 only has the 12" bass. The one I have is the 15". I don't
know how much difference it would make to the sound. It will save
some weight which could be useful if you have to carry it around every
week for practising with the band.

Keith.

when i play live with my dtxpress2 kit i just run directly stereo into
the main board and use a wedge monitor system. making sure that the
stage volume is low is the key.

++++Warning!! do not play on a stage that carries vibrations well
with your e-kit unless the stage volume is low!++++

at some venues, whenever my bass player hit low notes after i hit my
cymbal pads they almost always cut out, this happens when the band is
playing full throttle and guitar amps are too loud as well. a marshall
stack can pack a wallop of bottom end. this sucks and makes it sound
like you are choking all your cymbal crashes. even when the trigger
sensitivity is low, this still happens. the last time i played live i
switched to my real cymbals and it worked out alot better, but every
now and a gain my snare pad wouldnt trigger some of my roll strokes,
which is annoyin too.

these probs never happen when we rehearse as there is no room volume
really , just me tapping the pads and the dry vocals, as everything
is run into a mixer, no amps, and run into a multi jack headphone
solution box. this way its all coming out mixed well to the solution
box and from there everyone can have the volume they want in their
phones.

its all about the front show and making the music sound balanced and
mixed well, all instruments and vocals should be coming out the front
p.a., so either you have a stage monitor system at a low to mid level
and come out the fronts too, or you get a big ol amp and blast out
stage sound, while the others are coming out the fronts making it so
you have to be cranked to be heard and run the risk of trigger getting
triggered either on or off by vibrations.

if the band is worried you are taking up spots on the board, tell them
"hey at least its only 2 lines, instead of 6-8 mics for an accoustic
set-up!"

Re:Amplification

Hi
We put all our bands equipment through a tascam 2488 digital
recorder(so we can record too) and send the stereo output from it to
a yamaha mrs400 powered speaker and a guitar amp (till we find
another mrs400)Or we can send the mono signal to just the mrs400.
next we will be looking for sub woofers!

JBL, Mackie, QSC, Yorkville, BEHRINGER, Peavey, anchor, tech-pro,
pyle, DJ Pro and Samson, (the list goes on and on) all make a powered
speaker anywhere from 100 to 1000 watts so just find your price
range, wattage and the quality you want and bobs your uncle!!
