Bell/Bow Ride Cymbal

Bell/Bow Ride Cymbal

2003-08-22 by pair6s

I just bought my DTXpress a month ago. This was my first set of e-
drum, even right out-of-the-box, I was very impressed by what it can
do (for the amount of money I paid).

I have already upgraded Tom 1 & 2 to dual zone pads and added a 4th
Tom to the set (Input 9 via a TRS splitter). For my next upgrade, I
want to plug the current Ride cymbal (PCY80) into Input 10 and use it
as a 2nd Crash and buy a better Ride cymbal to take the Ride input.

I am having trouble finding the cymbal to the specs that I need.
What I need is a Stereo cymbal trigger with bell/bow (I don't need
edge).

Everything I've seen so far is bow/edge trigger. As you know, Stereo
triggers plugging into the Ride input must be 1 piezo/1 switch
configuration.

Where can I find such animal? Please help.

I don't think you can. The only thing we can assume would come close
is the mythical PCY150 "triple zone" cymbal which hasn't been
released. The only way you could get what you need is to give up one
of your 9/10 inputs to a PCY10 bell pad, which is a regular piezo
trigger.

I've been thinking about this I don't know how someone would go
about making a membrane switch work over such a large area as a
cymbal bell. Round a rim seems straightforward, but on a large flat
area it must be quite likely that the switch would "collapse" on
itself.

I'm glad you've mentioned the "triple zone" triggers. I do not know
the technical details behind it; however, my best guess is that even
with the TP65S, the "triple zone" triggers are still single piezo
with one (or possibly two) switches.

Since I have the original DTXpress, the module can't fully utilize
the triple zone triggers. What would be interesting is that someone
try a TP65S on an original DTXpress to see how the module responds to
the 2 zones on the rim.

There would be 3 possibilities:
1) Only 1 side of the rim will produce sounds.
2) Both sides of the rim will produce the same sound.
3) No sounds will be produced.

It would be logical to me that the supposed PCY150 use the same
technique to achieve 3 zones. To tie all this to the intended
discussion on the bell/bow ride cymbal, if possibility #2 is the
result from the above experiment, owners of the original DTXpress can
still utilize the supposed PCY150 (assuming the bell & rim are
switches) and other triple zone triggers as dual zones. If
possibility #1 is the outcome, then a (simple) rewiring can be done
so the user can choose to between the bell or the rim.

If someone would try the TP65S on the original DTXpress and post
their findings here, that would be greatly appreciated. We can then
further close in on the already narrow gap between DTXpress I & II.

If you look in the photos section you will see a TP65s that has been taken
apart that shows the two rim ribben switches and the single piezo for the
pad trigger.

You would get two zones only pad and rim. The two rim switches would act as
one.

Correct. You get this effect if you plug the 65S into any of the
stereo rather than the triple-zone inputs on the DTXpressII.

My query about the way the "triple zone" cymbal worked was not
electrical - I agree it would work in the same way as the TP65S. It
was mechanical. I don't see a way of making a membrane switch which
was big enough and robust enough to operate over a wide, bell-shaped
area without eventually collapsing and being untriggerable. The only
thing I can figure is it might work a little like a "mini-TP65" -
the membrane switch is just on the edge of the bell, but the bell is
rigid enough that striking anywhere on it closes the edge switch.

Any way it works, I'd love to have one...

If the original DTXpress can be upgraded to use triple zone pads by
popping in the chip from DTXpress II, that would be by far the best
upgrade for us orginal DTXpress owners.

All right, who's got access to both DTXpress I & II and willing to
try this out? :)

Besides the triple zone upgrade to the DTXpress II brain, are there
any other differences when compared to the original DTXpress brain?

I've only had the DTXpress for a month, and already I feel like I
have an addiction problem. Thank God for this support group. Now I
am reassured that I am not alone. :)

If not too much trouble, can you please post the markings on the chip
in this forum or post a snap shot of it? This way, someone can
determine if the chips are even pin compatible. Thanks.

There are photos in the photos section under "Inside the
dtxpress\dtxpuII" photo album of the inside of the module. The chip
is the long black one in the center bottom of the module.

Re: Bell/Bow Ride Cymbal

2003-08-26 by pair6s

The pictures of the chip in the photos section were too small. It
isn't possible to determine what type of chip that was (cannot read
the markings on the chip).

Say if the original DTXpress uses chip type ABC and DTXpress II uses
chip type XYZ, and upon the results of looking up the specs on those
2 chips determines they are NOT pin compatible, one can conclude that
the chips from DTXpress I & DTXpress II are NOT interchangeable.
(yes, that was one long sentence).

OGD, if you would, please post larger picture of the chip or just
post the markings on the chip in this discussion forum. Thanks in
advance.

Really? Hmm. Doesn't work here. Does it have to be enabled
somewhere? Or perhaps it does bandwidth detection and disable it if
you're not on broadband (I'm on ISDN... long story) - must try it

I was going to ask about how you get the biggest picture, but the above
doesn't work on my Mac running OS X, (thumbnail and mid-sized fine, large
size no way), and I tried three different browsers! Obviously this isn't a
problem for this list and I've reported it as a bug. Very frustrating as
some of the labelled pictures are impossible to read.

Not a bandwidth issue as I'm on broadband and can't get the larger sized
picture either. I'll have to try it on our token Dell tomorrow.

It's probably because the web site is using nonstandard HTML code specifically
designed for Internet Explorer browsers. If that's the case, then you should
lodge a complaint with Yahoo and request that they follow WWW consortium
standards for HHTML coding, because otherwise, they're discriminating against
non-I.E. users. I deal with this all the time...

Sorry, lazyness on my part. The "standard" reply format that is setup
at the office, uses different font/color/style that I have to delete
my [name] and change fonts and stuff. So sometimes I just type a
response in the original message and then hit send and it adds the >

PB,

I am using windows 2000 pro with Microsoft-IE as a browser and I can
get the three sizes. I guess this may be a good reason to have photos
posted to the dtxpressions site, so that the full resolution photos
can be stored for downloading.

Nice theory Tonto, but (a) I'm using IE6 on XP on Intel and (b)
actually IE is a lot better than it used to be (even though it pains
me to pay even a back-handed compliment to the bespectacled

Wait, are you the same person who couldn't get the pics to go full screen?

Actually, I'm talking about the fact some some web sites don't work with
browsers like Opera, Netscape, Mozilla, etc. One example is Cisco's student
web site, which will not show certain things in a student's grade book page,
and the I.E. browser is the only one allowed in which the chapter tests will
load correctly (in my case, Mozilla just sits there after I click on the
"continue to test" button).

One of 'em, yes.

Tried Opera too (identifying itself as anything other than IE) and
still no dice. It's not the browser's HTML renderer - the source
does not show the "screen size" picture as a link to the full size,
it's just a table row definition with an image in it. Clearly I am
being discriminated against because I'm a Brit.

Anyhow, enough. I shall pester the alleged helpdesk at Yahoo. Back
to our scheduled program, "hitting things with sticks for fun and
profit."

OGD, if you would, please post larger picture of the chip or just

The original IC chip in the dtxpressII:

Part no. X302310

Other numbers on the chip itself:

m27c160
100f1
58850
ST 0042k
singapore

The upgraded IC chip in the dtxpressII:

Part no. x3023200

No other markings on the chip.

The chip is a 42 pin.

Has anyone with the original dtxpressI opened it up to compare the
internal arrangement to the photos in the photo gallery for the
dtxpressII?
I will send an email to Yamaha support asking the question of
compatibility, but I think we all know what the answer is going to be.

If it were just a matter of replacing this chip to get the 3-zone
cabability, then I would not have a problem with sending my original
chips to a fellow member.

Gee, if everybody here that has the dtxpressII, were to send off for
the upgrade chip, then take the original IC chip and send it to a
fellow member that has the dtxpressI module????
What a concept, everybody wins.

I'm a convert/advocate to/for Mozilla Firebird V0.6.1. It's a lean, fast
implementation of the Mozilla Browser. It's what I use on *all* my
machines now. What sold me:

A) Firebird's DEFAULT option is to block non-solicited popup windows
(Unless I click a link that directly invokes a new window, I *never* see
popups anymore!)

B) Tabbed Browsing is addictive, once you try tabs, its hard to go back.

I only use MS Exploder for "Windows F*ck-up-fixer", er... I mean "Windows
Update" :) To get Mozilla Firebird (or full Mozilla if you need email and
news support) go here:

http://www.mozilla.org/products/firebird/why/

I also use Open Office and it's components for all business stuff on my
laptop so I don't have to spring for MS Awful^H^H^H^HOffice. :) Get it
here:

http://www.openoffice.org/

Best part, is it's all free... well, except the freedom part... *that*
needs to be defended and defending it isn't free! Directly support your
freedoms here:

I should have the pictures of the internals from the original
DTXpress posted sometime this weekend (or sooner).

pair6s,

I have sent an email to Yamaha Support, regarding using the dtxpressII chip
in the dtxpress1. It generally takes a day for them to get it and send a
confirmation email and then 2-3 days for an actually reply. So maybe my
Monday of next week I'll have thier reply to post here.

IC chip for the Dtxpress1/2

Wow, what a quick response back from Yamaha. Yamaha's response:

"That would not work because the motherboard is totally different.

YCA Support"

But it was worth asking the question.
