Noise & Neighbours

Noise & Neighbours

2003-09-23 by freefunky12

Greetings,

I see there already exists a few posts regarding this subject.
I'm a swedish drummer that just recently bought a dtxpress, mainly
to perform vigourous practicing. At the time a live in a dorm room.
Apparently the set creates some noise disturbing the neighbours on
the fourth floor (right below me), though I haven't really got it
properly verified since the no-namer chose to go via the land-lord.
And this is, by the way, without me having a bass-pedal yet (will
get it soon). How do all of you other dorm-room dwellers go about
this? I try to tighten all the clamps properly. I have two rugs
beneath the set, even though I'm considering a third. But what the
f**k: I never play after, say...nine o'clock, always with my
headphones on, so it's not LOUD. As i understood it from the unknown
complainter, it was merely a question of me practicing for a long
period of time at a time ( which is not true....only 1,5 hr so
far....a warm-up). So they can perceive the sweet tampering above
them for a few hours a day, but this is a student area. Parties
everywhere, loud music (although not every day).....so it's a wee
bit of double-standard. I have however encouraged the no-namer, via
the landlord, to go and see me in person.....then we'll
see.....until then I'll keep my workout intact.

Bye,
Rick

I have consistently pointed out the following to anyone that is
contemplating the purchase of a e-drum that live above/beside
(condo/apartment) other people or to anybody that has just purchased a set,
before they play it for the first time.

Before you purchase, get to know your neighbors and see what their
temperment is. If they are constantly complainly about any/all loud events,
even with the best sound insulation platform, you will still get on their
nerves.

If they are level headed and easy going, get to know them first. When the
kit first arrives, invite them up/over and let them try their hand at it.
(New toys are fun for even non-drummers). The better you know your
neighbors, the easier it is going to be. I have done many freebie favors for
the neighbors and I have played at all hours of the day/night without a
single complaint. Even when I had an acoustic set growing up, after cutting
the neighbors grass or shoveling the snow for free several times a year, I
never got a single complaint. The moral is: Family/friends rarely complain,
but strangers almost always will.

Re: Noise & Neighbours

2003-09-23 by anttipi

I think talking to the neighbors was a good idea (as I wrote in an
earlier post my downstairs neighbors were banging on the roof as a
protest to my playing - but curiously enough didn't admit it the next
day and seemed very co-operative :)).

Rick, at least here in Finland (maybe not to the same extent in
Sweden) people often treat their neighbors as complete strangers who
sometimes don't even deserve a hello (or rather, people don't want
to "intrude" into other people's lives by speaking too much to people
they don't know well - in fact it's even considered polite and
respectful). So against this background it was a bit unpleasant to go
talk to them. People will always be nagging behind your back anyway -
as in your case the unknown complainer who went straight to the
landlord.

Musicians have the right to practise in their apartments. My friend
told me there is even a law or something in Finland that allows you
to practise your instrument up until 8 pm. Of course, pissed-off
neighbors will always find an excuse to throw you out of your rented
apartment if they really want to :(.

In most cities here in the U.S. there noise laws that allow a certain level
of "noise" between certain times of the day and even some "off-hours"
special occasion noises. But I am certain if I were to snubbed my nose up at
the neighbors and play whenever I can legally play my drums without regard
to them there would be consequences. If they were to see someone breaking
into my home and stealing my drums (or other items), I doubt they would be
helpful and call the police and report it. Good friends and neighbors would
report it, strangers would not.

Plus what about when you have a late summer party with friends that run past
8 pm.

I live in the area of the U.S. that was just hit by the hurricane Isabel. 95
percent of the people in my area lost power, phone service and water had to
be boiled. Some will be out of power for another month. All of the food in
our refrigerators had to be throw out and gasoline was extremely scarce the
past few days. The neighbors that have become my friends to a point where I
can play my drums night or day are the same friends that pulled together to
get through the disaster of this hurricane.
