Problems with kick drum volume when recording (a little long)

Problems with kick drum volume when recording (a little long)

2000-11-18 by toyrobot@juno.com

I hope this isn't off topic, there doesn't seem to be an equivalent
group for the DS-12. I bought this set so I would have a kit to record
with at home. Just plug it in to the mixer and go. Trouble is, the
kick drum sound on every single kicj is insanely loud. Just turning
the kick sound down doesn't really help, because the peak is so high
it needs to be turned down too much and the kit sounds awful. There's
just this incredible peak at the very start of the waveform. The first
time I used it, I blew the fuses in my main power amp, and this was
NOT at a high volume. I've also tried to send the kick to an aux
output to deal with it seperately on the mixer, but the process needed
to do this is ridiculously complcated, and frankly doesn't seem to
work very well (Why they couldn't have made this easier, and GLOBAL,
so that it would change all the outputs for all the kits at the same
time I don't know).
On the other hand, maybe I'm just an idiot, if anyone can tell me what
I'm doing wrong, I would appreciate it.

Joe,

Welcome to the list. There are a few of us non-Xpressers here, myself
included (DS10), and we're allowed to post as long as we don't make fun of
the red stabilizer have-nots.

Bizarre kick problem. I can't say I've seen anything like that (I assume
your brain is DTX v2) and I've plugged my kit into a mixer and my 400 watt
peavey PA a hundred times without any problems.

Do you find this problem with all the preset kits or just some of them. And
is it true for whatever kick sound you select? What's it like through
headphones?

For some strange reason I've always preferred to plug my RCA jack into the
aux port on the kick tower instead of the main one. You might try that.

Apart from the explosive kick, how do you like the kit?

p.s.: Maybe you've just got an incredibly strong right leg, like a world
class cyclist or field goal kicker.

I like the set, but until I can solve this problem, I cant do much
with it. I don't play particularly hard, and yes, it happens with all
the kits, though some more than others depending on the sample.
throough headphones it sounds fine, and I've been pretty forced to use
them, since I can't play it through my regular system without risking
damage to speakers or amp or both. There has o be something not set
right, but I've itialized the unit... I don't know...

Joe

I was just about to suggest initializing...Tonight I'll spend some time with
my DTX and see if anything strikes me. We'll get to the bottom of this!

What happens if you run a pad into the kick jack instead of the tower and
trigger the kick sound with that?

hi im new here, ive been playing dtxpress for a year, it is plugged into a
hi-fi (i dont know much about hi-fis, all i can say it costs about 700$) it
works fine, nothing has been damaged, no problems when recording (minidisc)

btw: anyone from Poland here? (east europe)

anyone tried using roland pads with semi-real drum heads with dtxpress?

and one more question - what is the sensitivity switch in hihat pedal for?

I had this problem with the DTXpress on my first live gig.
Sound Engineer Daniel Speed was tearing his hair out trying to mix the sound
because all he was getting was bass drum.
The Dtxpress has a high and low tone adjustment function, which would have
reduced the problem.
It seams the issue is with the amplification, not the brain samples.
Best advice I can give is to reduce the output level of the kick drum sample
in the voice menu, I'm sure there must be one in your DS12.

Just like you, through headphones it sounded fine, but through a PA, OMG the
bass took your head off.

I have no experience of the DS12 so I can't be any much more use, but much
sympathy goes out to you.

Re: [DTXpress] Re: Problems with kick drum volume when recording (a little long)

2000-11-22 by Sanctum

I use a custom kit which now has Mesh heads like the Roland V-drums and
custom built triggers.
OK so my triggers need a little work to fine tune the sensitivity (too
sensitive right now) but all works very well.

The DTXpress will support the V-drums but the mesh heads offered by Pintech
(www.e-drums.com) are far cheaper and have had good reviews.

Hey guys... my DTXpress should be arriving today!
anyway, just out of curiosity, How does the DTXpress compare with the DM-PRO
when it comes to sound quality I'm aware that the DM-Pro is 20 bit and the
DTXpress is 16, but I'v heard that the DTXpress even though its 16 bit
matches up with the DMPro, is this true?

Thanx

If you're still having this problem...

Have you checked the attenuation dip switches on the back of the unit? They
should all be in the up position. Down will increase the output.
