Anyone using the "TO HOST" connection to their computer?

Anyone using the "TO HOST" connection to their computer?

2003-10-23 by zapaxe

Hi,

Anyone using TO HOST connection to a computer?...Using midi better?
Same?

I just started experimenting using midi with my Cubase based
computer DAW.

My Aardvark Q10 audio card has a midi In/out & I'm now
plugging/unplugging my Keyboard & DTX when I want to record either
one with midi...

I just remembered the DTX has a TO HOST connection which if I'm
correct is similar/same to midi.

If I can use the TO HOST with the DTXpress to my Cubase computer,
then using my midi IN/OUT at my sound card, then I won't have to do
a switch.

Also if I'm correct the TO HOST is a TWO WAY connection with one
cord & with midi I need to used two cables.
But what I'm NOT understanding here is the concept of not using my
sound card as a way of connection to the DTXpress?

And also, where do I get this TO HOST connector/cable?

Clue me in here?

Thanks, Steve

Steve,

Not too many people use "To Host." For one thing, MIDI isn't exactly
rarefied air; most musicians have a soundcard or some other access to
MIDI ports. Furthermore, the cable is notoriously hard to find. Most
Yamaha dealers don't appear to carry it; maybe yours does, or can get
it for you in a reasonable amount of time. If you do decide to
exercise that option, the "To Host" driver is located in the Files
section here. The other option is to connect a MIDI interface to USB
and make all MIDI connections simultaneously. It will come with the
appropriate driver.

Thanks Ed for the reply,

Hmmm, didn't know the TO HOST connection would be so rare.

My Aardvark Q10 sound card does have midi in/out which I'm using for
both my keyboard & drums, but I'm having to trade off sharing by
plugging/unplugging the midi in/out connections.

I'll also look into that USB connection & midi junction type boxes.

UPDATE

To anyone who does not know where to buy a TO HOST adapter if they
choose to go that way...

Musician's Friend sells them & also I think Music 123 sells them
both on-line for around $16.00 to $19.00.

I just bought one. But I'm trying to figure out how to use it this
weekend.

Too bad they're only 5' 3" long! I know the manual say's that
maximum lenth for a TO HOST cable should be 1.8 meters, but I hope
they're leaving a good margin. I saw at COMP USA that they sell a D-
SUB 9 6' cord extention (the other end of the TO HOST cable - one
side being a mini din).

I've had to take my DTXpress module off my drum rack & put it on my
desk so I can make that 5' 3" cable reack the back of my computer
DAW!

I'd like to find an extention cable that's just a couple/few ft long
(all I need) so I can put the module back on the rack! But if not,
then once I get the TO HOST cable working, I'll compare the 6ft
extention cable performances to the 5' 3" original cord.

...Of course I know I can use regular midi cables!...

Steve
