Metronome Tap Feature

Metronome Tap Feature

2003-11-20 by freakndrummer

Not sure if this has ever been discussed. A search of the archives
didn't yield anything.

Some metronomes have a tap feature built into them; usually a pad or
button which you "tap". You tap along to a song and the metronome
tells you the bpm (beats per minute) of your tap. Handy for both
cover tunes and original compositions.

I've searched both of the DTXpress II manuals, tried a number of
searches of the archives (using variations of the words in this
posts subject heading), and sat and stared at my module willing it
to 'just do it' - "Use the force Luke" - No luck.

It seems that all of the physical pieces are in place to make this
possible, but the programming itself may not be present in the
module. If it isn't, it should be (for any Yamaha tech's who may be
lurking). :-)

Does anyone in the group know if this is possible?

I don't remember the topic coming up during all my years of
involvement here. Maybe Stewart, the group's poor beleagured current
archivist, has run across it in his research. A check of the manual
didn't turn up anything either. A feature of this sort could very
well have some educational and practical value. Including it on a
list of recommendations to Yamaha might be a good idea. I agree that
it doesn't seem like much of a technical stretch to implement. A lot
of trigger devices and drum machines accomplish with tapping what the
DTXpress does with manual programming.

Alas no. The closest thing is the "groove check" which would only
tell you how far off you were from the tempo you didn't know...

Seems like such a simple thing, and would make the groove check twice
as useful.

Stewart (beleagured, indeed)

Ed,

Something else that should have been added to the drum modules from all of
the manufacturers in leau of the one or two of the practice songs would be
Rudiments. It would be an excellent tool for beginners to practice to, since
you can change the tempo of songs, you could slow the it down at the
beginning and then speed it up as you progress. And since the Yamaha module
has a built-in groove check, you could keep track of how accurate you are
keeping up.

Ed, Stweart and OGD,

Thanks for your replies. I thought as much, but wanted to run it by
the group before I begin looking elsewhere.

OGD, I think your comment on some form of rudiments being included
in the module is a great one! That would be an additional selling
point, especially to teachers AND parents of younger drummers

That's two suggestions for Yamaha :-)
1. Include a metronome tap feature
2. Include a selection of rudiments with the groove check.
Dump most of those chessy songs if memory is an issue.

Thanks again guys!
