ROLAND CY6 DUAL TRIGGER CHOKABLE Settings? PLZ HELP!

ROLAND CY6 DUAL TRIGGER CHOKABLE Settings? PLZ HELP!

2004-01-04 by DTS-2

Hey all,

I really searched and found notta on this so here goes,..

I just got my DTX 1 and I love it. I'm using it for recording, I have the stock set. I found a killer deal on ebay 120.00 shipped for 2 mint ROLAND CY6 12" CRASH CYMBALS. I am moving Toms 1 & 2 to channel 9/10. I have to go to radioshack tomorrow and get An insert adapter. Which they don't make, so I have to use 3 adapters to create it. About 17.00 worth of stuff total. 8>(. lol The shack is lame, but all I have locally.

Any way, mY QUESTION IS: Where in the manual is the instructions about setting the CHOKE feature once I pick the voice for my new cymbals? I bought these cymbals for there choke feature, but I can't find it. Arrrgh! There not choking right now, Hey I just had a thought, if I could find out how to copy the ride cymbals parameters over to my crash, I could then change the voice to a crash? These cymbals will choke when plugged into the ride cymbals input, so I know they work properly.

Man this thing is very complex compared to my Alesis DM5. I have a ton to learn,...

PLZ HELP??

First, welcome to the group. In order to get the choke feature to
work, you need to program the "pad type" setting in the trigger menu
(first page?). If I remember correctly, you might have your best luck
setting the CY-6 as either a PCY80S or a miscellaneous 2. You'll
figure it out.

Also, Radio Shack can be a decent source for inexpensive cables,
piezos, and the like, but you can also go crazy there buying adaptors
to compensate for what they don't carry. Personally, I'm not crazy
about adapters; they give you two points of possible disconnection.
If you want HOSA TRS (tip, ring, sleeve) "Y" cables, or the
equivalents, any decent brick-and-mortar music store, like Guitar
Center, should have them. You also may as well learn about
drumbalaya.com now; it's the definitive store for all things related
to electronic drums. When you get a chance, visit the site. You will
be amazed.

Hey ED,

Thx a lot 4 the fast response! 8>)

Is there any known problems using these Roland CY6 Cymbals with the
DTXPRESS 1? Or is it just a matter of tweaking the settings?
I hope its the later, I got these 2 Roland cy6's dirt cheap on ebay
120.00 shipped for the pair. The guy was really cool, there mint.

I found where to COPY a pads parameters, although it doesnt take even
though its says COMPLETE!. The pad I copy to still remains the same.

I've tried the CY-6 through a DTXpressI. I wouldn't say that it's a
match made in heaven, but it should work fine when you arrive at your
preferred settings. I hope that the seller included the little metal
attachment for the cymbal stand that comes with the CY-6; as I
recall, they, like the Yamahas, tend to rotate on the stand.

I can't think of what the problem might be offhand--unless you're
expecting the copy function in trigger to also copy the data in
voice, or vice versa. They are two different animals.

You nailed ED,

I was expecting the copy function to copy everything including the
voice over to the other pad. I am still tinkering to try and find the
section U spoke of about the choke function.

If I could find that, I would be happy.

Thx again.

Hey ED,

Could you say why you didn't like the Roland cy6 cymbals with the DTX?
Just wondering what I'm in for.
I HAVE AN OPTION TO RETURN THEM LESS SHIPPING. I was going to get 2
dual Pintech Zenbals @ 95.99 a pop. But these were so damn cheap I
couldnt resist. lol

Thx man,..

The dtxpress module doesn't have a specific setting that turns
on/off choking.

The Dtxpress I module has choking available on trigger inputs 1-8.

The Dtxpress II module has choking available on trigger inputs 2,6,7.

The Dtxpress III module has choking available on trigger inputs 1-8,
unless a RHH130 is used on input 8, in which case choking is
disabled.

So you don't really "activate" the choking in the menu. The way you
get choking is you must:

1. Use stereo cymbal pad that has pad and rim switch.
2. You must use a stereo cable to connect it to the module.
3. You must set the trigger input to "PCY ride" or "PCY crash".

Press the [Trig] button to enter the trigger edit mode. Scroll down
the input trigger that you are plugging the pad into, say:

TRIG*IN = 6 ; TYPE = PCY ride

In your case you should try pad TYPES: "PCY ride" or "Misc 2"
or "Misc 4", to see which works best.

Hope that helps and welcome.

Thx a lot OGD,

That makes sense,.. I am tinkering right now. I'm starting to get the
hang of it. I'm sure theres a lot I don't know yet though. lol
I guess I'm glad I got the DTX1 instead of the 2. I like the idea of
having the options of 1-8 chokable pads instead of 2,6 & 7.

This site is great, I really appreciate the help! The sooner I get
some kits setup, the sooner I can get back to recording. And thats
what means the most to me. 8>) THX AGAIN !

I discovered this when I first got my dtxpress II set, so I sent an
email to Yamaha tech. support. When they confirmed that the II
module no longer had choking on all inputs, they graciously, burned
some new ROM Chips for my modules, so that I now have choking on all
inputs. With just the basic kit, there really isn't a need for all
the inputs to have the choking function. But due to the number of
cymbal pads I really needed that capability.

It would be an exaggeration to say that I flat-out didn't like it.
You may be perfectly satisfied with it. Its general response seemed
slightly subdued to me, and the edge didn't always fire reliably. I
haven't used a stereo (bow/edge) cymbal in some time, but I tried a
lot of them. In general, attempts to activate the edge sometimes
triggered either the bow voice or no voice. Also, strikes on either
bow or edge could sometimes activate the choke, cutting off the voice
much too quickly. Many of these mishits could be attributed to poor
stick placement (sticking is simply not the same for e-cymbals as it
is for acoustics), but design certainly bears some responsibility.
The CY-6 wasn't necessarily worse in this respect than other stereo
cymbals; they all have their quirks that require time and effort to
tame. I recall having much more luck with the Zenbal stereos out of
the box, though other people have reported frustration with them, too-
-at least for a while. Stephen Brown has been a longtime happy Zenbal
user; you can find his review of the Pintechs in our files section.
From what other members have written on this board, the Yamaha PCY65S
cymbal is not so prone to the difficulties that I found routine a
couple of years ago.

One unfortunate thing about buying e-drum components is the general
inability to try them out first. We often depend on third-person
reports on boards like this one to get an idea about what we might
like. But the advice only works to the point where the personal
element takes over, and that is not always easy to determine. My
humble suggestion would be to keep the Rolands. Maybe when you get
more familiar with, or more curious about, other options, you'll want
to trade them for something else, but in the meantime, they will
probably serve you well. If eventually you think otherwise, a market
for them should still exist.

Re: ROLAND CY6 DUAL TRIGGER CHOKABLE Settings? PLZ HELP!

2004-01-05 by apcmechanic2

Hey yeah,

I totally agree, These Rolands really need to be wacked hard to get
them to fire right. And it's very inconsistant as far as the tip and
the bell sounds. Sometimes the spot you hit last time wont fire it
moves to the right or left. Very annoying.

I'm not happy, I'm looking to see if maybe an adjustment of the DTX
sensativity will fix this so I can hit it as lightly as the yamaha
PCY80 and get a response from light to heavy AND IN BETWEEN.
If I can't remedy this problem, I will be sending them back. And
either getting Zenbals or 2 Yamaha PCY80's. I'm bummed, they were
priced so nice, I really want them to work out.

Oh well, Life sux then you tell it to pizz off, and ya' fix it! lol

Thx for the input man. 8>)
