Where did the ink go?

Where did the ink go?

2011-03-17 by Scott Hendershot

I have a 1400 and use it with UT14 inks in refillable cartridges. Two weeks ago I refilled all the carts and then let the printer sit. Tonight I turned the printer on and did a nozzle check. Two channels were blank so I ran a few cleaning cycles with no improvement. I pulled the two carts out and they are empty! It looks like the ink ran out of the carts while it sat idle for two weeks.

Has anyone else experienced this and is there anything specific I can look at to remedy this and be sure it does not happen again?

Thanks.

Scott

I have had many problems with refillable cartridges. It is one reason I have gone back to using only Epson Cartridges. I have learned to refile Epson cartridges, but in your case in using B&W UT-14 only inks, I don't think you would be able to do it.

Most of the refillable cartridges I have used leak, or do not allow ink to flow properly. They are JUNQUE.

I don't know if MIS has changed 1400 cart suppliers, but I've used several sets of Eboni-6 and empties from MIS for the 1400 and not had a single defect or problem. Well, a couple of the carts have been tight and hard to pull out of the slots, but that's not a serious problem and has no impact on print quality.

I did have ink flow through the printer with 2 positions -- Eboni K and HP K in the C position -- when the 1400 was hauled into the Golden Trout Workshop on a mule, with the ink loaded (an experiment I'll probably not repeat), but I don't consider that normal usage.

If your cap station fits properly and you overfill the carts or fill them in place and flood the capstation (ie:flood it like you would deliberately do while puddle cleaning) you can inadvertently set up a siphon and empty the carts into the sump.
Assuming that your carts are ok that would be my guess as to what happened.

Paul,

Thanks for the reply. Even knowing that people have not had this problem
helps to narrow it down to operator error.

Duane,

Thanks for the reply. I think you hit the mark. On this last refill I
noticed that I added more ink than usual to a couple of the carts. There is
no fill line on them so knowing where to stop is kind of just from
experience. I will certainly watch the fill levels in the future.

I did email MIS about this and while I'm generally very happy with their
products I can't say the same about their email support. The answer I got
back was pretty lame just telling me that there are two holes on the top of
the cart and to make sure to insert the plug into the fill hole and not to
cover the vent hole.

Thanks again.
