Newbie question: what wide printer and B&W ink set???

Newbie question: what wide printer and B&W ink set???

2002-03-05 by interrogtr@aol.com

I've been following this list for some time and sometimes I think that my
confusion gets worse. So let me state my objective and just ask for help on
system recommendations.

I want to dedicate a printer to B&W printing only. I want to be able to
print up to 11X14. I care tremendously about archival print quality. I'm
thinking that a continuous ink supply system is the way to go but I'd even be
happy to be educated about problems, if any, with that. My total budget is
up to $1500 (although I'm not opposed to purchasing something below $1000).

Does anyone have any recommendations regarding which printer and which
inks/pigments meet my needs.

Thanks for any help.

Get the Epson 1280 and the Cone Piezography Software, CIS and inks.
www.inkjetmall.com.

I just got going with a used 1160 (a tad over $200) and a CFS kit and
inkset from MIS (sepia>neutral quadtones). Their prices are all
online.
I also bought Eclipse Satine in various sizes (www.photoinkjet.com)
This "system" is producing beautiful prints and I can recommend it.
And it's well under your budget.

Best printer: Epson 1280/1290 (up to 13x19)
Best out of the box system: Piezo Driver / Cone ink.
Cheaper version: Piezo driver / MIS FS ink.
(So you may buy the Cone set with normal carts and then switch
to a CIS with MIS FS ink).
Cheapest system: MIS VM with Paul´s curves, no special
software required (but somehow the system with the most
tweaking quarrel).

Okay, here's my take.

Epson 1280 which will get you up to 13x19 or 13" rolls - $500

CIS - $250 to $300

Ink and workflow choices:

MIS VM inks - $52
Paul Roark's curves - Free

or

MIS FS inks - $52
Piezo driver - $335
(You buy the software for the 1160 which includes software for all the
Epson's Piezo supports and comes with a set of cartridges of Piezo ink you
toss. They don't sell the software alone but I think $335 is not a bad
price.)

Both workflow will make excellent prints. You may find the learning curve
will be easier with the Piezo driver.

1280 Printer, MIS archival hextone inks for black and white. If you like cold tones, get the VM variable tone inkset, and use Paul Roark's
curves. Gorgeous prints! Get a continuous inking system from Mediastreet. It's called Niagara. Best on the market.

Jerry

PS you can print up to 12.5x44 inches.

Hi Drew
I noticed you suggested the Inkjet mall and the Piezography™BW. do you think
its the better way to go rather than the MIS stuff? Sorry I am new and I´m
beginning to get really confused!!
At the moment I´m using Lyson Quadblack in my epson1200.

Hello Frank,

I have a question to You about the Eclipse Satine. Is the surface of
that paper a semimatte or is it just a matte like Epson Archival
Matte?
I am looking for a paper that is little less matte than that.
How does it perform compared to EAM??

greetings,

I'm having great success using PiezographyBW software with the MIS Full
Spectrum ink. In fact, I'm having a lot less trouble with the MIS ink than
I did with the Cone ink, ie. none at all. Check it out.
