Byron,

I would opt for a refurbed 1280 ($399 direct from Epson with warentee) over
the 1270. More people are using the 1280 and there will be more workflow and
seperation curve choices. Also leaves Piezo open as a possibiltiy.

I have some virgin 1280 cartridges and chips from MIS that I hope to get
around to using in my 2nd 1280 sometime soon. I have not heard of any
problems with their one time chips for their carts. Their reset software for
there CFS system is only Win 98 compatible I believe.

Is there really a big enough difference between the 1280 and 1270 to
justify the $125 difference in price? My understanding was that they
used identical inksets and similar printheads, so I was
thinking/hoping that the workflows and curves would be the same for both.

I'm really hoping to spend no more than $300 for a system if at all
possible, as I'm a student and moderately broke at the moment :)
(Though my hope is that if I can offer gorgeous B+W prints to my
admittedly small client-base I'll be able to pay for this machine
rather quickly)

Do yourself a favor and buy the 1280.

There is nothing smart about buying a printer that is obsolete...especially if the major players (Cone, Roark) and the user base is leaving it behind.

Consider what Martin said about the curves.

Just a little solicited advice.

I have both printers, have used MIS VM inks in both, and I think there
is enough advantage to using the 1280 to make it worth the extra money.
Being able to print at 2880 and the more refined curves available for
that printer are definite plusses. That and what Steadman and Martin wrote.

2002-03-04 by byronbulb

Thank you everyone! :)

I guess I'll need to do a little more saving and go with the 1280.

I had been hoping to find a less expensive solution, but if the point
is to make excellent and saleable prints, it's probably worth getting
the printer that everyone recommends.

So is anybody using a CFS system on a 1270/80 along with XP? The
resetting method described at MIS sounded dreadful. Even if you
have Win98 you still have to reset using a serial connection right?
It sure would be nice if there was a chipped system that always
showed full without resetting and could use MIS inks too.

Thanks,

Tom Husband

Thanks John. I guess it's now Niagra? It still is kind of
cumbersome as you have to stop printing. The nomorecarts
instructions read:
1) Push the paper feed button down for 4+ seconds (the print head
will
     move into cartridge changing position).
2) Remove the provided sensor clips. You can replace them
immediately.
3) Push the paper feed button down briefly and the printer will do a
charging
cycle (since it thinks you just installed a new cartridge).

You are ready to continue printing. The whole process takes a couple
minutes.

What if you're in the middle of a job? I guess you make sure it
shows full before starting? What about uninstalling the software
that shows how much ink is left? Would that keep it going?

Thanks again,

Tom Husband

The instructions you are quoting are for the nonchipped carts. The
1270 carts are chipped and thus show full all the time. I have a CIS
for both (1160 nonchipped and 1270 chipped) and that is the way it
works for me.

There is. It's been recommended on these lists dozens of times. Its the Niagara system from mediastreet.com It used to be called the
nomorecarts system. Chip always reads full. No hassles at all. And of course you can use MIS inks with it. I do.

This is not how the niagara system works. Once you install it you can forget it. Every time you turn off the printer for any reason, it
resets the chip so it reads full. The only time you could run out of ink is if you were printing hundreds or thousands of prints and just
kept printing till the ink runs out without ever shutting down the printer. All you ever have to do to reset it is turn off the printer and
then turn it on again. I've never had to reset it in 8 months. It's the very best system available.

Tom,

I have had the NoMoreCarts (same as Niagara and Conetech) CIS on my 1280 for
6 months and all that is required is to answer the Epson driver's question
to whether you really want to use none Epson cartridges with a "Yes" each
time before you make your first print after turning the printer on. Not a
big deal at all and the cartridges always reads full. Running Windows 2000
BTW.
