Jerry, I have a 19" Viewsonic Flat Screen LCD Monitor at work. It is wonderfully sharp, had great color BUT I do not like it for Photoshop work as the tonal transitions are not as smooth as a CRT. Go to a shop and check one out before you commit. Regards, Michael J. Kravit Architect/Photographer Boca Raton, Florida www.kravit.net

Hi Michael, I'm not getting a new monitor soon. I just saw a flatscreen montior for the first time yesterday, an Apple. It was very sharp, brilliant colors, but it was a tad contrasty. I don't think the fellow that had it had calibrated it, or possibly his images were just too contrasty. I was VERY impressed with the sharpness, though. I thought my mitusbishi 2020 U was sharp, but Apple's flatscreen showed me how sharp a monitor really can be. I just found out that Canon is releasing the their new Digital D60 next month, so am going to put all purchases on hold until I find out all about that camera. Jerry Michael Kravit wrote:

Clark Thomas forwarded me an interesting article on the whole approach to flatscreen monitors, and how the current method of manufacturing them will soon radically change to a different material that will make them FAR more affordable. It made me think that someday I will certainly own one, and the price of two or three thousand dollars for a large one will be a distant memory. The article implied that this new method is already beginning to happen, and it will not be long at all before they start to show up on the shelves. It also implied that you won't see these radical price jumps between the 15 and 17 and 21 inch models, and even MUCH larger ones than 21 will be common. If you've changed planes in Atlanta Hartsfield recently on Delta, you've seen an example of this new style. Above EACH boarding gate area is a giant, and I mean like six or eight feet across, flat screen monitor that's very bright and very sharp, that supplies ever-changing information on the flight. If this was the "old technology" and an Apple Cinema display was $2600, can you imagine how much one eight feet wide would cost? So this was obviously a whole different approach. Below is part of the article: (snip) NEXT GENERATION WALL HANGING TV's ARRIVING: The Flat Screen Ultra Thin (about TWO inches) and Ultra Light weight 16 x 9 TV's. Some wall hangers have been around for years now and have had unbelievable high prices. Between you and me... the picture quality was not all that great either... Now comes a new generation and a New Technology..... Organic, yup! Let's call the old systems TFT / Plasma like your Laptops, Notebook computers and the 32" to 60" behemoths at airports and sporting facilities walls. The new technology, OLED, or Organic Light Emitting Diode is FAR Cheaper, Very light and NO HEAT & only 29 pounds instead of 65 pounds for a 32" and 35 pounds for a 50 incher as opposed to 85 or more pounds for the old Plasma. $999 may actually prove too high a price believe it or not for the 32" and even the 50" could be less than 15 hundred once the dust settles. Oh, and we are talking 2002 gang... not some pie in the sky 5 to 10 years down the road. All these plants are coming on line as we speak here. This OLED is not only far SHARPER, but it may Only come in HD as 1280 X 1024 would be the bottom resolution!Already we have 2048 X 1536 @ 60Hz has been successfully demonstrated at 120" diagonal level! The temptation will be to jump at crashing Plasma prices as these new OLED's will be all over us in weeks and not months and Plasma inventories will have to be unloaded. Remember, Plasma resolution actually sucks compared to this new Technology... OK, I have a LINK so you all can stump the local A/V salesmen like you have been doing with my DV cam site for years:http://www.emagin.com/oledpri.htm (end snip) Mark Tucker __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Michael, Any hint as to its Price? Camera body EOS 3, or 1V? and was it a true 6 megapixel, full size chip? I'm about to sell a bunch of gear to get this camera, and I am VERY interested in the details! Jerry Michael Kravit wrote:

Mark, we were born too soon. I can hardly wait for an affordable 22 inch or larger monitor, with flat screen. Jerry Thanks for the link, I couldn't understand a lot of it, but get the over all picture.

Jerry, The D60 is basically a D30 with the same size sensor, but twice as many pixels. Details and sample images here: http://www.dpreview.com/news/0202/02022207canoneosd60.asp Carl

Well, it looks like the D60 is a real winner. $2995. 6.3 megapixels! I'll be getting one as soon as I sell a couple pieces of equipment. I have these for sale, if interested, please e mail me off line. 1 Canon EOS 1 N body, nearly mint condition 1 rolleiflex SL66 Body, Back, 80mm Planar lens, 50mm Distagon, Rollei Chimney Focusing Hood, and Rollei Hand Grip. Exellent ++ condition. Jerry

Jerry, It looked just like the D30. I am not familiar with the different Canon bodies. I was told it is a 24x36 chip and over 6mp. Regards, Michael J. Kravit Architect/Photographer Boca Raton, Florida www.kravit.net

You can subtract $1000 from your budget Jerry. The current price is now $1995! I think a price war is about to start between the Canon D60, Nikon D100, and the new Sigma with the Foeveon chip. Wouldn't be suprised to see these cameras going for about $1500 later this year. Carl

It is over 6MP Michael, but the chip size is the same as the D30 and the multiplier is still 1.6. Smaller pixels, but the images still look pretty clean. They did reduce the max ISO from 1600 to 1000 though, probably because of too much noise at high ISO. Carl

Micheal, Yes. I got rid of my darkroom, and have scanned all my good negatives and have prints of them. I can do practically anything I need to do with the digital, and have no processing, film costs, etc. If I want a panorama, I just take 2 or 3 photos and stitch them together in photoshop. Only takes a few minutes, and you can't tell it wasn't all one shot. With the 6.3 Megapixels, the canon will have the highest megapixel count in consumer cameras, for a little while, any how. And they are large pixels. I already can get very sharp 12x18 prints from my D-30 for everything but far off landscapes, and with the 6 megapixels, that will easily do landscapes. Also, it isn't that much more money than the D-30 was when I got it. $2900 is a very good price for canon with those specs. There's a huge article on it and it's features at the digital preview site, and also a place you can actually buy one now. (Of course I don't imagine they'll actually be shipping til April). I don't suppose as an architect you'll be able to get by with 35mm format, but canon does have those 3 tilt and shift lenses, so you just might if you don't need larger than 16x24 prints. Carl, you have GOT to be kidding! I think I can swing that without selling anything! I sure hope you are right! I'm really happy with the D30 camera, and a 6 megapixel camera is all I'll probably ever want or need. (Until the 12 megapixel camera comes out at half price!). I'm sure glad I couldn't afford the D1. Think of the disapointment those camera owners are going to feel! Do you know when it will actually be shipping? Jerry Carl Schofield wrote:

Tonight I saw an exhibition featuring about a dozen fantastic panoramic images by Alan Zinn. They were on display at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, CT. It was a collection of street scenes using his "Lookaround camera." I was excited to see the 180 degree plus images used in a situation that was different from your basic landscape. I especially liked the one with the 3 blonde ladies walking across the street, all caught exactly in the same step! It is exciting to see such wonderful images be produced and displayed so that everyone can see what can be accomplished with an inkjet print. I am proud to be a part of this group.
