Offtopic--Photoshop 6/Mac OSX problem

2002-03-24 by Robert Morrison

Sorry, this is off topic.

I had been using Photoshop 6 in classic mode with OSX for about 6 weeks with
no problem. Last weekend I fired up my SCSI scanner for the first time
using OSX. The scanner works fine...but now Photoshop won't open. I get a
"Photoshop has unexpectantly quit" error message when I fire it up. The
error occurs when the Photoshop intro screen says initializing. It works
fine when I boot from OS9.2. I've tried everything I can think
of...resetting PRAM, reinstalling photoshop, dumping the preference file,
tweaking the memory allocation...no luck...still get the error.

Has anybody else seen this?

Robert

Robert, I was never able to open PS 6.01 more than one or two times in the =

classic mode of OS X. Never found out why, didn´t solve the problem even wi=
th
clean installs. Gave it up finally and use OS 9.2 again. Have a SCSI scanne=

too.

I use Pshop 6.01 on a G4-667 Pawerbook in 10.1.3 Classic mode and
9.2.2. Never had a hiccup. No special memory allocations or anything.
BUT, the scanners and printers used on that machine are all USB or
Firewire.

Got it! It was a scanner/SCSI problem. I took out the Silverfast TWAIN
support that is hidden in preferences, in the TWAIN folder and it works like
a charm. Not a problem for me because I'm using Vuescan 7.5 for OS X to
drive the scanner (works great). The other problem that I've heard of (and
had at first) was having two much memory allocated to Photoshop. I used to
have 1 gig assigned to Photoshop in OS9.2. As I understand it...you can
only use about 490 on a G4 with 1.5Gb of RAM now with OSX. The amount is
less if you have less RAM...there are some posts on this in the USER forum
on Adobe's web site...but nothing that I could find on SCSI devices. As far
as I can tell...when it opens...Photoshop 6 performs equally well under OSX
on my G4 dual 450. I'm looking forward to PS7...but still haven't heard
much about how plugins (e.g., Genuine Fractals, Nik Sharpener Pro, PiezoBW,
etc.). My print server still has OS9.1 and Photoshop 6...maybe I'll have to
keep that for printing piezoBW.

Robert,

If you are using Photoshop in Classic assign no more than 299
Megs - or it will crash or slow down a lot. One way to make life
easier is have two copies of Photoshop - one for launching in OS
9 with as much memory as you would like and another with 299
megs of memory assigned to it for Classic.

Wish Classic supported SCSI/Twain as my Howtek can only run
in OS 9. Wish Vuescan supported Howtek - that's not a joke
either :-0

Have not heard much about plug-ins - I think Silverfast is coming
up to speed.

Best,

John V.

Plugins WILL work in PS7 but ONLY when running as a classic application
in the classic environment. When you run it native in OS X they WON'T
work. This is because plugins are essentially little Mac programs which
run in photoshop's memory space, rather than interpreted procedures like
Actions. So they won't run in OS X unless carbonized or otherwise rejigged.

So that means I have about 300 plug ins that won't work in System 10.01. nice. I'm not about to update all those plug ins, not that any of
them even have carbonized versions. I guess system X1.1 is, for me, a more or less useless system. Thank God it runs on system 9! Another
reason to really dislike system 10, which I Really DO dislike!

I wonder if changing the order of your startup controls and scanners would
make adifference. If you get photoshop to load first....maybe.
Have you checked the adobe forums?
I admire your bravery...I'm too chicken to try it!

this is a memory issue. Try taking the photoshop memory partition right
down to the defaults and see if it launches then. If it does, you can
start raising it again.

I had hell with PS6 in OS X until I made two copies of the app, one for
running in OS9 and one for running in classic mode, with different memory
partitions.

Nope, turned out to be twain related this time. I had the memory problem
before and had photoshop set at the low defaults when it happened. Now that
I've got the Silverfast twain drivers out photoshop will take 300mb of RAM
and fires up just fine.

Good idea. I wonder if we will have to do this with PS7? I'm anticipating
using both the classic and native versions on the same machine...but I
wonder if they will have figured out the classic memory allocation?
Personally, I've gotten so used to OSX now...I hate to go back. I never
thought this would happen at first...I had used the MacOS since 1984 and
figured I would never learn a new way.

Apparently the betas of PS7 had an odd little 'memory setting' thing in the
preferences where you could set how much of the OS X memory PS7 would grab
for itself. How this interfaced with OS9 in classic mode is beyond me.
