Advice needed. My options w/ a 1270?

Advice needed. My options w/ a 1270?

2002-03-25 by mlphotos

I would appreciate any advice you all could offer. I've researched
this a lot, and I'm only getting more confused the more I read.

I have an epson 1270. What are my options with Quadtone printing?
The MIS inks look great, but I see they are only offered in cartridge
form (for the 1270), yet they don't have cleaning cartridges for this
printer. How then would I get the color ink out? Is anyone out there
happily using a 1270 with MIS quads?

From what I've read, most of you have older printers that are off the
market. I'm not opposed to buying a new printer if necessary, as I
will need both color and BW printers anyway. Would another printer
be better for quads? I don't want a used one however (ie the 1160)
because I'd want to be able to get a replacement quickly if needed.

Thanks in advance,

You are better off using a CIS from mediastreet (niagra) and then choose
whatever bulk inks you like. The advantage of a 1280 is that it is supported by
the Conetech Piezography BW plug-in which makes it easy to print with either
Conetech inks (inkjetmall) or MIS FS. Either way, there is no reason to search
out old printers like the 1160 any more.

MIS will be offering fully charged CFS units with good features in two
or three months. I don't know how many inks will be offered, but VM
and maybe FS, who knows? You will also be able to charge your own. The
problem is resetting the chip, and this may be solved....stay tuned.

If you don't mind working with problematic software, MIS will sell you
their CFS, you just need to run Windows 98 on an LPT port to printer
to reset chip. Even at this the app has many bugs. As I said, stayed
tuned re chip resetting...

Someone on this list reported that WeInk will sell the read only chip
separately, but the website does not report as such, and a phone call
to them denied they sold it as well. Still the poster must be assumed
to have good info, as a price was quoted. I am going to call them
again this morning to see if indeed they WILL sell the Read only chip
separately. They have something called a "smart chip" which is just
the common resettable chip.

yet they don't have cleaning cartridges for
this

If your going from Epson ink to VM ink you won't need cleaning carts.
Only a few inks that have different PH's need this. For example
switching from Lyson pigs to MIS or Piezo pigs you would need this.

They DO make cleaning carts for the 1270 ready-made, you just haven't
found them yet. JET Jrano does that task, just has a funny name:

http://www.mediastreet.com/cgi-bin/tame/mediastreet/inkcart_results.ta
m?rlk=1077590

It is possible to fill a virgin cart from MIS with cleaner solution.
For example on the Weink site, they sell their own version of BULK
cleaner, which you then have to inject into a cart. I think Ultrapurge
II part # CL9999( Don't use Ultrapurge III although it says it's for
pigment ink- call We-Ink 800-539-3465 and ask them about using ver I
vs II vs III). I have never needed to fill a cart this way, but I know
that this solution and others in bulk can be used.

 Is anyone out
there

No, I went with the 1280, knowing that it is a more current model.

Thanks for the reply,
I just ordered some VM cartridges from MIS and will be trying them
out shortly. I figured I'd need the cleaning cartridge to get the
color epson ink out, but the lady at MIS said a few cleaning cycles
will do just that.

I also saw that MIS just released a new chip resetter for the 1270
carts. http://www.inksupply.com/index.cfm?source=html/qb7.html
This should solve the reset problem for people running Win 2k or XP,
and also enable refilling (I think)?

By (Fully charged CFS) do you mean one with a "read only" chip that
always looks full and needs no resetting? If its cheaper than the
other ones offered (Niagra) that would be worth waiting for.

Happy shooting and printing!

Doesn't InkJetArt.com still sell the same CIS w/o charging for
shipping? I think the CIS accesssories were also less at IJA when I
got two of NoMoreCarts.com's CIS, one from IJA for quadtones and one
from MediaStreet (w/Gen4 bundled).

THIS IS A SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION
I just wanted people to know that I also sell the system with no
shipping charge at http://inkjetgoodies.com -- and there is still one
in stock.

PS I apologize for the self promotion, I'm not sure how else to tell
people the info, so I will always designate it as such. I don't want
it to look like any joe is saying it. Please tell me if this offends
anyone on the list.

I don't know what site you were looking on - their
(inkjetgoodies.com) prices seem to be in line with inkjetart,
mediastreet, inkjetmall, etc... I ordered something from them last
week and was very pleased.

Jerry,

For the most part Media Street has very competitive prices on Hahnemuhle
Papers. They are listed under the "Royal" series name. You can usually
equate the names by the weight. Photo Rag 308 is made by Hahnemuhle as well.

Once again, where are you looking? -- the highest priced Lyson Fine
Art paper is $229 not $239 and its 11x17?? If you're comparing it to
Royal Plush 310, then point taken, but compare apples to
apples...find any Lyson dealer selling that paper under the Lyson
name for less... compare Lyson, Epson, Museo, and Legion (concorde
rag, somerset PE) prices and you'll find they're right on.

Lyson Standard Fine Art, Lyson Soft Fine Art, Lyson Photo are all Hahnemuhle
papers, only they are marketed under the Lyson Name.

Yes, I meant 11x17. I am still not used to the silly inkjet paper sizes
after many years of photo paper sizes. In any event $5 a sheet for 11x17 is
outrageous!

Jerry,

The Hawk Mountain Papers are very nice. Blacks are very close to Hahnemuhle.
A friend of mine recently did a Museum exhibition of 44"x44" black ink only
on Hawk Mountain Condor. It was lovely. They were 70mm Kodak HIE negs that
were printed with MIS Double Density Black. These puppies were BIG!

What papers would come next? Anything new that is much less money?

Thanks Mike,

I haven't heard of their "Condor" paper before.

Jerry

I'm using the Generations Enhanced Black, which is just a tad blacker
than the Double Density.

I've not tried to use just the black ink, but if the paper has texture,
my 1280 might just carry it off.

Is this paper pure white, or cream colored?
