Re: [Digital BW] Canon printers - ICM profiles

I've finally gotten around to playing with this more...

There seems to be something WAAAAY funky about the ICM profile Canon is
using...

If I choose Manual color adjustment and select ICM matching, that,
according to Canon should give me the closest color fidelity from and
ICC/ICM app like Photoshop... all well and good..

BUT, if things are implemented logically, I should be able to convert to
that ICM profile w/in PShop itself and then output to the printer with
NO color adjustment as my selection in the printer driver...

Well, that that does not work..

If I do that, my image is waaay dark..

However, with ICM checked in the driver, there is no difference in the
output image whether I apply the ICM (convert the profile) w/in PShop or
not...

This could make profiling other media a real pain in the butt!

The question will be:

Do I:

a) Create profiles for individual media leaving all the color
adjustment at none? (in which case I will probably custom profile all
the Canon media as well)

b) Create profiles with ICM checked on? (in which case I take the
chance of losing colors in the double conversion that will then likely
be taking place -- once in PShop & once in the driver)

I'm leaning towards the first option. Thoughts?

If so, it looks like it's time to get a Spyder and Photo Suite Pro...

Can you email me a zipped or stuffed copy of their canned profile, so I can
check and see what is in it? I suspect foul play in the form of forced sRGB.

It's attached...

The other weird thing is it's dated 2000!

Plus PShop picks it up as a Generic BJ Printer Profile..

The actual installer for the printer driver is at:

Shoulkd you want to look further... ;-)

No its not... you need to send it just to me, not to the group, both out of
respect to group members with slow connections, and because most list servers
strip off attachments.

That qualifies as an understatement. The profile you sent me way unopenable
in any current profile analysis software, but I did manage to get at least
some info on its contents from a much older program. It was listed as a
monitor profile instead of a printer profile, and as a CMYK profile (an
interesting combinations, since I have never seen a CMYK monitor) , but best
of all it has 710 tags in it... most profiles have less than a dozen.
Attempting to deal with the tags was a guaranteed crash and burn scenario...

So this profile has no relationship to a legal ICC profile and is not
intended for open ICC uses such as editing or applying within Photoshop
(Photoshop wouldn't even list it as an available profile). So tread carefully.

Normally, does each tag in an ICC profile serve as it would in any other
database or data file? i.e. to marke and delimit a specific field of data?

If so, what are those fields normally like in an ICC profile? -- do they
delimit bounaries in the gamut?

What I'm getting at is why the hell there might be 710 tags, versus an
average of a dozen?

BTW: If you see a CMYK monitor do us all a favor and wake up out of your
dream.. LOL

RE: [Digital BW] Canon printers

It appears that the viscosity of the inks for Canon printers are entirely
different than for Epson printers. So, the inksets have to be entirely new.
Too bad. That probably means substantial delays before there will be an
FS-N equivalent. A simple diluted-black quad like the FS will probably be
the first effort.
